I hate unions. SO MUCH. Is it just me or do they just protect lazy workers?
Sure... 1% of the time they bring up a legit gripe... but 99% of the time they only function to slow things down, protect lazy idiot workers, and prevent the good workers from being promoted. Is it time to abolish unions, while strengthening basic workers rights laws at the same time?

To put it simply, basic worker's rights laws would not be strengthened without unions. Yes, unions may have some bad, but there are some good things they do which would never get done without them because the corporations would be too strong. Lastly, I take issue with your tirade against unions - they are at their weakest point in a century and only continuing to weaken. Please pick another battle to fight! You're just kicking them when they're down.

If you have a 5 day work week, an 8 hour day you could thank unions for that. If you don't have those working conditions, don't worry. Soon people's rights as workers will evaporate and who will speak up for you? Companies biggest and most hated expense is guess what, employees wages. If they had their way you would only get paid enough to get back and forth to work.

Could you imagine this country without unions, (scary) We would have the same rights as any of the third world countries. Companies could get rid of you for no reason.
You say abolish unions and strengthen basic workers rights, why do you think Unions were formed, because workers had no rights and you expect to strengthen workers rights without unions. (even the basic ones)?

Find out what the pay rates were about 1900. Then go to your boss and tell him that is all you want to be paid.
When you have done this then come back with your question again.
emanon....Your last statement is spot on.

The labour movement brought an end to child labor practices, improved worker safety, increased wages for both union and non-union workers, raised the entire society's standard of living, reduced the hours in a work week, fought for and won public education for children, and brought a host of other benefits to working class families.

This is particularly important for groups who are more likely to suffer labour-market discrimination. On average, women in Britain earn 20% less than men for the same work but women who are union members earn 24% more than those who are not [11]. In countries that restrict the right of citizens to this form of free association economic growth does not seem to be enough in itself to correct such problems. In China for example, the pay gap between men and women has actually increased in recent years despite the booming economy

The 'race to the bottom' by most corporations continually erodes the pay and conditions of employees. Unions are one of the few democratic institutions that seeks to resist this; if employees in more third world countries enjoyed the basic civil rights of workers in western economies, then the cost differential would narrow and less jobs would be moved off-shore

I agree.. There should be NO UNIONS!.. To me it doesn't make sense that one job over the other is better and deserves the work the unions give. In that case EVERY job should have a union.

Cripes, it hurts me to say this, but I agree. We may need more union(s). Look at the resistance to paying legal workers more than $7 an hour to build houses in the freezing weather, and claiming that no one is available to do the work. Why don't we let temporary "guest" workers fill in the empty seats of CEO's who justify their ridiculous salaries as due to scarcity of "talent". Unskilled labor makes less real salary now than in 1973, despite a 33% increase in real productivity. CEO compensation has risen 27% each year since then, with an inverse relationship between profitability and CEO compensation.

I hate laziness/greed at the both bottom and the top of the food chain.
