I have a question for those who have an MBA??
My hubby is finishing up his MBA. He has a bachelors in english and has been working in a non management job in logistics as a freight coordinator. I was just wondering how much of an impact this degree will affect his career. Any comments? Those of you who have rec'd an MBA ...did it make a big difference? Is it that big a deal to employers??

yes, it will make a difference in his employment opportunties. it's about a 20K raise in the first year out in a corporate job. this isn't to say that new headaches won't come with the money.

Every manager I have asked has told me that an MBA looks great on a resume, but I have BS and I get by fine (40k for entry level in a profession which has NOTHING to do with my degree). As always experience outweighs everything else. I'm not saying an MBA is worthless; but it certainly will not help if your husband cannot back up his education with a commisurate amount of real world experience. Short of that, many HRMs will state the polite "overqualified" crap. It also depends heavily on the needs of the organization and what the scope of his role is. If an education is required for creative analysis and knowledge of business THEORY, then an MBA might help. Keep in mind, however, that is very common for people to get a degreed position who have no education beyond high school. I have always advocated higher education to fulfill the need of personal enlightenment; the days of absolutely requiring a higher education to get a high-paying job are all but over. Employers are recognizing that a person who can regurgitate answers for tests over four years are oftentimes less capable as a worker who has four years of industry-specific experience. I feel as though I am digressing, so I'll wrap it up. The MBA will help depending on how it is used. Warn your hubby not to fall into a trap I fell into early on (luckily I got a break); I had a BS but NO experience. Every position I applied for (which paid enough to pay back the student loans) required a couple years of experience in addition to the degree. Make sure your husband has enough experience to back up his MBA. As a loose example: what would you rather have? Someone who spent 6 years at a university learning how babysitting 'should' work, or someone who has 6 years real world experience actually babysitting? Employers know that a classroom cannot teach you everything. Look at the modern English language; most people receive 12-14 years formal training in the English language, and most people still can neither speak nor write it correctly! Take the above text as an example; I am told that I am very good at writing, but I am sure it still contains several typos and grammatical errors :)

1. Not all MBA programs are created equal; generally speaking, those that graduated in the top 40 programs in the US will probably recoup their investment in their education.

2. It's what your husband does with the MBA, how extensive / challenging was his MBA, program, etc. that determines whether the MBA education was a success.
