ebay has a safety feature where people who do not pay for items or describe an item incorrectly, etc. can be reported. It is like any other shop... except some items you have to fight for by bidding against other members and others you can purchase straight away if they are a "buy it now" item

Yeah its safe but saying that my husband just paid $2800,00 for a supercharger for his mustang, the guy has got his money and still no supercharger, so all i got to say is be causous
look at the person who ratings are high and have good remarks,
and bank the money and wait for it to clear before sending out what ever it is your trying to sale, you dont want to send of somthing before the money has clear, just incase the check or paypal gets declined... got to be carefull

Hi there, well, e bay can be pretty safe depending on how you go about it. it is generally effective as there is a huge number of people who look on e bay for stuff of all kinds. If you place a listing there are some basic guidelines you can follow to make your listing best effective, e bay will prompt you as you go through it, but remember e bay is looking for everyone to pay for each listing and have a tendency to suggest extras that aren't that cost effective, especially if the item is not of a big value in the first place. But generally, have a good photo or two. Good detail of possible, write a snappy heading, maybe offer no reserve depending on the item, it does encourage more bidders, but of course it does lay you open to a final sale valur of less than you might wish, although you can of course start the bidding at a price that is the minimum you want for the item, there again, that can deter bidders, people seem to like a bargain of course, and it is a bit like fishing here, if your bid starts at say a pound, or dollar, whatever, folks will bid and then watch it, there is a phenomena that occurs when a few bidders will be sucked in to a bidding war, not necessarily because they want the item badly, but because they hate to be beaten!! That is a known e bay fact. So the more watchers, or bidders you get interested usually the better. Of course, Buy it Now is good if you want a quick sale, you can also stick in a best offer option, although that tends to bring out the comedians who will offer you next to nothing! Description should be reasonably sharp and short, with some good powerwords in there, to stir up the bidding juices, so to speak. It is beneficial to sell it to a worldwide audience, that is an option you choose when listing, it is just as easy to package something to the USA as it is the UK, the customer is paying the costs anyway, I usually weigh an item at home, then refer to the online postal rates and list those, if you are real lazy, just put in a line somehing like, International bidders please ask for postal rates, etc. Then if you have to do it, you can at the time.
Remember it is ok to make a little on post and pack, that way you can sell your item a bit lower than the competition, and make it up on the postal charge, it is imprtant to note though , Don't overdo it, people usually hate that, when the postage is hiked up too much, a bit is fine, too much and you will drive them away. Probably good to register with Paypal, if you haven't already, it's free to register, but they do charge a final fee, a percentage of the item you sell, it varies on what it is, and how much it goes for, there is a rates table on the e bay and paypal site.
Most importantly, safety can be an issue, you are likely to be targetted for unscrupulous e mails from third parties who claim your e bay account needs to be verified, and the ask you to click a link and enter your details again, Avoid this at all costs, they are spoofs, liars basically, they are looking to grab your details and steal from you in any way they can, and it happens. Often the e mail looks very similar to the e bay letters you will get, they are pretty good copies, one clue is generally they don't know your name, and it will be dear member or dear ebayer, or something general, ebay always write to you using your name, anyway, ebay never ask you for your details again, they don't need to. If in doubt, look in your messages on your e bay and see if it is there also, if it isn't it's fake. If still in doubt, send it to e bay, at spoof@ebay.com
and they will check it for you, but remember never give out information, anywhere for that matter. The people who are out to steal from you use a lot of different angles as well, not just send me the info routine, be wary of, a congratulations unexpected mail, you have just bought the "random item" anything goes in there, car, mixer, boat, or pets toy, of course they expect you to contact the sender and say, not me! that's what they hope for anyway, during the course of the mail will be once again, enter your details to confirm, Be aware.

So all in all, it can be fun, and profitable, just be careful

Good Luck

I have been on Ebay for a no. of years the only problem I have experience is un trusting users but this is only in the minority

Definately. You list your item, when the bidding ends, the winner pays you (via paypal, preferably), and then you send the item to their address, which is usually their paypal address. If they don't pay, you report them, and can relist the item. If they do pay, you just send the item, and if you don't within a certain amount of time (week or two?), you'll be reported. You can easily tell who you're going to have problems with from their feedback score.
