I live in UK. I am one of three directors of a limited company. I am also self-employed by this company.?
I am trying to fill online tax self-employed assessment and hit upon some questions i can't answer. Is my status legal? Or what do I do. I don't take any money from the company except as a director - which I hav done twice in the last year (under £200). Thanks.
As a director you would still need to fill in a self assessment tax form, although my accountant does this for me.
Basically, you pay yourself a salary that totals your tax allowance code. This goes through the books as a cost against the business. This allows you to file a P14 from the details on your P11D form and create a P35 which covers your NI stamp, although you won't pay any NI contributions.
Also, you can have a directors loan account and when you take money out above £5000 the Inland Revenue will want to tax you. So you would declare a dividend instead to wipe the loan account off. This dividend will go on your tax form and you have no tax to pay because the company paid corporation tax on it's profits. Bear in mind you can only take a dividend if your company makes a profit.
The HMRC web sites tend to have a help desk phone number.

As a director of the compnay you are classed as employed not self employed.
You need to speak to an accountant and HMRC as it sounds like you are registed wrong

Hi,
You cannot be a self employed Director. Your status as a Director is employed by the company.
If you were a consultant then you could be self employed.
You can however be a company director and be self employed in another capacity.
Hope this helps.
