Ever since man has been able to provide more food than the immediate need, "he" has been allowed the luxury of specialization of labor. The specialization of labor creates trade. Early trade was tools and food and developed from there into more and more specialized trades and business. The 1800's were not that long ago, just before autos, but after the industrial revolution.
