Pay the piper. |

Some stores have worked out a system where you pay a "fine" directly to them. In exchange they don't file charges, you don't go to court and you don't get a record. Pay the fine and be done with it. Otherwise, they have the right to press the matter, file charges and cause you a world of problems. What you did is a criminal matter, so take the option not to have it reported as such.
I do find it revolting that you would steal from a store and then challenge the righteousness of their claim against you. That's a whole lot of nerve. |

you have two options, pay the fine or go to jail. I
t's your pick, I would choose the first one if I was you. |

ya, they can press charges but they'll only get far if they have evidence. If you were caught on camera, your royally ******. If its just "he said/ she said" then you could contest it. PS this question can be used against you in a court of law, anything online is considered a published public source. |

there were three girls in my school who stole a kitkat bar, and they got arrested for a few months.
yeah, they can sue you lmfao. |

Stealing can definately ruin your career. It can be put on your record and make it hard to find a job in the future.
But, they will most likely sue or file a claim against you and you will have to pay much more than the fine. The fine is just a nice way asking you to pay. The lawsuit/sue is much more serious. |

Depends on the specific store, but personally I feel they shouldn't have given you the option. They should have just hit you with full criminal case, followed by a full civil case for all costs incurred by your criminal tendencies.
Once a crook, always a crook. You'll be in and out of prisons till you die. You should start getting used to it. |

pay the fine, and return the stolen property.... |

are you stupid |

Yes...
They can collect restitution....in CA it's $1200 regardless of the amount of the item you stole...They also will collect from you the cost of the good that was stolen....The court cost. The attorney fees. The cost of any employee wages that were spent on your case.
You can end up paying over $5000 for a pack of gum. Then you are going to court...you will have a record...might have to do time...most definitely community service and have to take some counseling that you will have to pay for as well. |

yea, as someone who's been caught before I know how this works. first you go to court and they'll tell you how much to pay or whatever for breaking the law, or even how much time youre gonna do and they'll probably tell you not to go into that particular store any more. but thats not the end of it. the store will ALSO bill you for the merchandise. for a CD I was billed almost $400! |

spiritual_bliss
yes they do, pay the damn fine and return the item |

DestinyCyrus
Yeah I think they do!
But just wondering...
why did you steel in the first place?

Kay G
Oh they do.
My friend got fined for taking three dollar eyeliner, and suffered with 500 bucks in fines.
First, if you don't pay, the rates higher with time.
And then they drag your *** to court.
Good luck :) |

Heck yes! There not kidding. Pay up. You could go to PRISON for shoplifting/Burglary.
Pay up or go to Jail. Your choice. |

TRUTH IS RELATIVE
1. Did you admit restitution when they arrested you? 2. Is the court date concerning your theft? 3. If you owe them money because you stole then you need to pay up because 1. Its the right thing to do and 2. because they can do a lot more than sue.
EDIT....Mr. J Mac, it is out of the store managers hands now if he admitted restitution. |

Im not really positive on this one, but if they pressed charges, Im assuming they did, because of the court date, I think its up to the court, not the Victim to decide what punishment you receive. My advise would be take the letter to court with you and let the judge explain it to you, he might interpret the letter as harassment |

Meghan W
wtf??? what did u take?
they prolly could sue u... uh oh! |

Terrin S
ring someone who nos like the cops and ask if they would sue u depending on what it was, if it is something exspensive you might get sued good luck! |

JERRY JERRY JINGLE BERRY
well you can go to court and fight it, or go to court and lose and pay even more or pay now and not pay as much....i always say take ur day in court...but if ur guilty...i dunno |

Mr. Vanessa Hudgens
how'd they get your address? |

scsriver
Pay up They can put in prison for that if the store wants push it.
Don't you know that is wrong. How would you like it if some one
stole from you? |

PiggiePants
If they are taking you to court, and there is already a court date set, I would say they are taking this theft very seriously. They may be satisfied with just putting you in jail. They've already put time and effort into this, so they seem likely to pursue a suit for the fines. |

Word
It depends on the item you stole. go to your cities website .gov it has all the information you need. See your rights on their page. |

Oh Boy!
Of course they do. You probably have a criminal court date. That doesn't make the store that you stole from whole. They'll sue you in criminal court and ask not only for damages but penalties too. |

Darrien W
what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... |

Rick K
Even if you pay the fine they can still sue. |

smiley pink
if its a big company, they will have absoulutly NO synpathey , if you dont try your hardest to pay up asap, then the fine will get higher and higher, if u cant get the $ soon then ur screwed, but good luck, and dont let stupid ppl give u crap 4 shoplifting, good ppl sometimes do bad things and that is perfectly fine, so dont feel bad, just try ur hardest to get that $ soon |

Justine Telan
Of course they sue you! You stole something!! |
