I think I've been scammed on the net by Videx Courier Service, can anyone help?
I got a message about a month back saying I'd won 250,000pounds on the UK national lottery online international sweepstakes competition, looking all official and everything. Then i had to speak to their courier to do it, Videx courier service, and they advised they needed 790pounds to deliver the cheque, it couldnt just be took out of my winnings as it was "under a hard-cover insurance policiy and couldnt be touched" apparantly. So, being dumb, I paid it & on the day it was to go into my bank they emailed me saying that the "uk anti money laundering department of the government" had stopped the transfer and I needed to speak to them. They gave me a hotmail address for them too. Since then, they've not replied, nor have this money laundering place either. Is there anything that can be done? Just that it was 790pounds that I've lost, all for nothing. Anybody have any ideas?

There are many Nigerian scams that are showing up nowadays. Please read the following carefully:

I can guarantee you that if you listen to these punks you will lose every bit of money you have and never receive any prize money as such a prize does not exist.

Another new popular scam is the lottery scam:

There is no Overseas Lottery International, YAHOO & MSN Lotteries, Yahoo online dept., UK (United Kingdom) Lottery, Netherlands Lottery, British Lottery, Thunderball Online Lottery in the UK, Australian Lottery, Spanish Lottery, Yahoo Lottery Microsoft Lottery (emmulating from the UK or anywhere else) or any other form of lottery you can win without buying a ticket. While some people might only copy and paste such email to their answer with a brief take on it, I will go into detail because I'm tired of this trash, as several of my friends have lost their a$$es to this scam. This is about as far away from legitimate as anything can get, whether it be a contest, promotion, or whatever.

There exists a certain form of immoral degenerate that trolls the internet searching for suckers who believe that they have gotten very lucky and won a lottery which they have never entered. They will probably entice you to send an advance fee to claim your non-existant winnings and if you do send this money, you can kiss it goodbye. The money will likely be en-route to Nigeria, a cesspool of fraud that has been the center of these types of fraud over the last few decades.

The best thing to do is to delete such emails immediately and to never reply to them. If you even reply, you risk having your email inbox flooded. If you call these people, expect to be harrassed over the phone at all hours of the night! In some cases, people who travel to claim their winnings in Nigeria are taken hostage, and in worse-case scenarios are killed when whoever is paying ransom payments exhausts their money supply. If anything online sounds to good to be true it always is buddy.

By the way, I have kind of become an anti-scam activists due to the fact that I have many friends who have had their identities and life savings stolen from them via these methods.

This is simply advance fee fraud (a prevalent type of fraud which continously asks for money to cover unforseen expenses) and is intended to drain your bank account, promising money that simply does not exist. Hopefully, this answers your question.

If you have any more questions, do a yahoo search on lottery scams, nigeria 419 scams, internet fraud, or advance fee fraud. You can also read more about this at www.secretservice.gov and www.419eater.com!

If you have lost money you should report it to the U.S. Secret Service at www.secretservice.gov

Now you know the basics of Advance Fee Fraud, a multi-million dollar industry that costs honest people their life savings everyday. Be happy you weren't duped by this scam!

I hope this is helpful, because I could sure use a best answer! I would appreciate it!

There's nothing you can do I'm afraid. I'm always 'winning the lottery' in lotteries I've never heard of and certainly haven't entered or other similar things. These emails are extremely common and should be deleted. The best thing you can do is to report it to the police but I don't think they will be able to recover your loss.

You learned a good lesson, forget about it.

alatoruk
if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is

I heard on the news the other day that millions of pounds has been ripped off in these scams and I thought "do people have no sense, you have won a lottery you didnt even enter and you dont think that's suss....."

you have just proved that obviously people do fall for such complete rubbish.

you can report it to the police, but they are unlikely to be able to do anything. Most certainly not get you any money back, so Im afraid the only thing you can do is put it down to experiance and learn a hard lesson. £790 to learn not to give money to strangers is a lot cheaper than it could have been.

LOL...........Typical case of scamming.........

Ripped off by another lottery scam. Call the local police with the info; there may be identity theft issues as well; and good luck.

Hotmail addy? Not in a million years would a reputable resource be using that.

I doubt that you'll ever see that money again, but you should file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (ftc.gov).
You definitely should've known something was up when they used a Hotmail account for a 'government agency' or when they asked for payment. A legitimate lottery does not need money to deliver the check, ever.
International lotteries are illegal in most countries, so if you see one in your inbox, delete it.

Even though it was a hard lesson learned, don't beat yourself up about it. While you're out some hard earned cash, you can get it back, as money is in abundant supply. Just be thankful they didn't get anything else.

How much does it take to understand that if you buy a ticket for a lottery.you have a chance of winning?
I don't think this questioner has been duped, after all, would you show how dumb you were?

fat tart
Report it to the police, although it is doubtful that they will do anything at all. I can't understand how your cheque can go missing when it has to be transferred into someones account to be cashed. Surely you would think that the police would try tracing the criminals by this means. Sorry about your loss but pretty stupid really.
