I started with Wal-Mart in May of this year. Our training class was NOT told of a parking policy. This last week, there was a letter taped up in the breakroom stating employess needed to park past the 2nd lightpole in the parking, which, FROM the store, is about half a block. We have a supervisor who is handicapped, in a wheelchair, and a few older employees who were authorized by the Department of Motor Vehicles to park in Handicapped slots. I don't mind the parking myself, but I am worried about those handicapped employees. Can Wal-Mart get in trouble for not allowing these handicapped people to park in Handicapped slots? |

~~Disability act provides for fair treatment of disabled people. The store can not by law have policies to take away these rights.
They are licensed to park in the handicap parking, and they should continue to do so. They can contact the State Disability Rights is there are any repercussions.

I would guess that the sign was put up for non-handicapped employees who were taking up spaces that should be used by customers. Every Main Street in America has had the same problem with employees wanting to park in spaces right in front of the store, so when actual customers tried to find a space, it was hard, sometimes impossible. I would guess that the management would make concessions for someone in a wheel chair or those with handicaps. I would guess, yes, they could be in trouble for refusing to allow a handicapped employee to park in a handicapped spot. They probably should take one of the spots to the side of the lot, so customers who are in the same way handicapped have as easy as possible access to shop. |

To be honest with you, Wal-Mart is not known for it's stellar treatment of its employees. I understand the policy and the benefit of closer spaces for customers, but certainly anyone with issues should be allowed to park closer. They are not allowed to force employees with handicapped tags to park further way and risk their health getting into their building. |
