No - that's why it's called overtime!

Check your contract first.
In the UK get onto ACAS - you can find them on the web. They know everything employment law.

In Theory ,of course not, but you continue refusing to work overtime, soon you will find yourself without a job. I suggest that you speak to your immediate supervisor and see if you could come to a compromise.

The official protocol, is certainly not.
The reality of it, employers will do as they want.

Al
only if your contract states you may be required to work overtime should they need you to, otherwise no.

No, there is European legislation stopping them, and if you work longer than 48 hours you may be breaking the working time directive,

Yes, only if you are pre-warn. When I worked for the school district we had a crises and we were notified in writting that we would have mandatory overtime for the next three months; two hours per day or all day Saturday.

Some of the people decided to go out of medical leave for elected surgeries or family medical leave terminate illness in the immediate family.

Judy1
If you're in the US, then yes, it's legal to have mandatory overtime for employees. It's legal for you to quit and find another job if you aren't satistied. If you just refuse to do the overtime, then they can and probably will fire you.

For most jobs, if you work over 40 hours a week thay have to pay you overtime pay of time and a half for the hours over 40.

ANN C
no dont think so, check with Dept. of Employment or CAB they will advise you

Lisa
no thats why its called overtime
