I am asian and I was having an "asian" style meal when all of a sudden my manager starts making remarks like "ugh, what is that stench? it reeks! What is that? You can't eat that anymore" Even though no one else was bothered by it and couldn't even smell it. There were other occasions where other people brought in food that made the place reek and she never said anything, Additional Details If I forgot to mention, what I was eating wasn't really strong smelling (according to 4 people around me. Matter in fact two of the people were shocked when they heard that and asked what I was eating. One cannot really smell what I was eating unless they were sitting in my lap. |

You have the right to eat whatever you damn well please. If he doesn't like the smell of kimche (I'm thinking that's what you were eating).... tell him to kick rocks.
As a matter of fact you should eat it every day for the next 2 weeks.
I really hope your manager was joking and not serious. I would eat my lunch however it smells and if she continues to have a problem with it, speak with HR about it.
I've worked with certain people who in their culture apparently don't believe in soap or deodorant (I won't point out a particular culture) but I don't tell them they can't come to work or "next time use Dove instead of washing your armpits with rotten mayonnaise"
We as Americans need to have more tolerance for other races. I've found that many white Americans particularly think they are god's gift to the planet. What's the first thing out white American's mouth when they're upset "GO BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY"... or "F... U... N-word". Why whites have such a hatred and aristocratic attitude is beyond me. You don't see blacks or asians dragging a white guy down the street strung to a pick up truck. You don't see white churches being burned or racial slurs against whites spraypainted, or the burning of some sort of insignia in people's lawn being done by other races. Just whites. Somehow whites are god's give to the planet and every country and every person must conform to the American way. Every country must speak English, and every country must conform to the way we do things (take Bush for example with his spreading of democracy), and look now we have to eat cinnamin and raisin bagels for lunch because unfortunately in this democracy you're not allowed to eat YOUR food. This is ridiculous. America is a melting pot of cultures and races and the sooner white America understands that the sooner we can stop with the ignorance. |

She can't tell you what you can and cannot eat. However it's common courtesy not to cook and eat anything in the office that has a strong (and to some unpleasant) aroma. For example heating and eating sauerkraut or fish in my office is frowned upon. Eat what you want for lunch -- but others would appreciate it if you would take anything smelly outside :o) |

No, she can't. I suggest that you notify Human Resources about your manager's obvious inability to remain professional during lunch. Her behavior borders on harassment. |

I think with things that are actually stinky (most fish, etc), people should be considerate and not bring it to work. However the most any company can do is ask you to be considerate of others. They can't flat out tell you not to bring anything. If you have other problems with your manager, then it's part of her pattern of behavior. If you don't have any other problems, then it might be that she is unfamiliar with anything that's not plain, good ol' American food and unused to the smell of more exotic spices.
If she does it again, talk to her about it in private, if you get nowhere, go to HR. I would think they would want to avoid a problem since it's obvious you could play the race card (even if you wouldn't). Companies always want to avoid that. |

do they tell the white people they cant eat popcorn for brakfast anymore when they burn it in the microwave and everyones clothes need to go to drycleaning becasue the horrid smell
no he cannot tell you what you can eat maybe where to eat if there is designated eating areas
go now disreetly and put a bag of popcorn in the microwave for 20 mins and act like you know nothing of it |

As long as you are not consuming anything you shouldn't be, such as drugs or alcohol, with your lunch, there is no reason for your manager to say anything about what you choose to eat. It appears that your manager may be totally insensitive to any culture that is not her own. If that is the case, ignore her and maybe she'll go away. If she persists in her remarks, talk to the human resources officer at your company. This is harrassment. It is also just possible that she thought that she was being funny and was teasing you. The less said about her sense ofhumor the better. Eat what you want and don't worry about her. |
