IS britain in a recession.?

daffadaffer
Well not yet.

Technically a recession is defined as two consecutive quarters of 'negative growth' ( another strange economic term).

The economy is the UK has begun to slow down and the last information to come out showed that UK growth had stalled.

Economists expect this quarter will show a 2% drop in growth this quarter (sending it into minus figures) and this will continue in the next quarter. This would mean a recession ( the first in the UK since 1991), but although the consensus is that there is a recession, it will not be verified until after the 2 sets of official figures come out

Not officially, we have to have 2 periods of negative growth for it to be announced. Basically we know after the event.
But its looking likely.
As for other countries thinking they're ok..dont laugh too much as it could happen to you!!

According to the 'High Street' YES! Due to the rise in costs of household bills, people have less money to spend on the high street and most supermarkets are showing a drop in profits too (except Morrisons strangely). The latest to declare a sharp profit drop was John Lewis, a store usually on top regards sales and profit.
As a retailer myself I can definitely say that this year has been the worst for years. But the Government will not admit to a recession.
