I'd open a scottrade account, pick 5 stocks in different sectors and buy $100 of each of them, you'll be diversified and have a great starting point. Trust me you want to be diversified, even though it's tempting to roll the dice, especially with the economy the way it is right now!! That being said I think it's a good time to buy while everything is low |

Don't think of me as a perv, but playboy. A while ago my little brother was doing a project on stocks, and he jokingly put money in it, and it boomed. They didn't really put money in it, the project was to get the most money with 2000 imaginary dollars. |

If you have only $500, I'd reconsider buying a stock. For one thing, you may have difficulty finding a broker who will open such a small account. Even if you do find one, you can't afford more than a very small number of shares in one stock. This is very risky. If you make a poor choice, you'll lose it in a hurry.
Be patient. Save up enough money to buy shares in several industries so that you have some diversification. In the meantime, buy a couple of books on investing in stocks or take a class at your local community college. When the time comes, you'll have a much better idea of how to invest wisely and maximize your chance of making a profit.
The stock market can be a great place to make money. You can lose it equally fast if you're not careful. |

I got really lucky a couple of years back....I put $500 down on (ID <----symbol "Identity Solutions"). It was $1.50 a share then... it is worth $18.00 a share now. Too bad I didn't put everything I owned on it then. I wouldn't recomend buying it now...(I think it maxed out). I don't have any great ones to suggest at the moment... but I can tell you occasionally you get lucky. Whatever I gained on this one...I have lost on others. My worst lost was Jacob Internet Fund (a mutual fund)...I bought in at about $12.00 a share...it is about $2.50/share now....lost about $10 K. For the long haul...I have been in "pharmaceuticals" and pacemakers (Medtronics)....I figure all the babyboomers will be feeding that market as they age. I have been trying to buy property now...with all the foreclosures happening. Just remember not to spend anything you aren't willing to loose. I am worried about the USA economy for the long haul. The 9 trillion debt is killing us...the dollar is fading ...next to other countries. Canadian oil might be something to research???
Good Luck! That is my best answer! |

I like tech sector at the moment myself. I recommend checking out what Jim Cramer recommends. Google Jim Cramer Mad Money Recap. Or better yet just watch his TV show, it's on CNBC most nights around 8PM. Above all be careful and diversify, you don't want to put all your money on one pony and loose it! Pick a few, 3-5 stocks. |

A good, aggressive mutual fund with a track record of success.
Try FAIRX. It's been tearing it up over the past few years, though I doubt $500 meets the minimum buy-in. |
