Jesse A | If I leave work for a dr. appt, do I have to tell my supervisor I'm going to the doctor? |
I'm not sure to what extent my privacy is protected by the federal HIPPA laws. My company does not offer sick time. They offer Paid Time Off which I use for sick time, vacation and holidays. When I ask for PTO it's none of their business where I'm going or what I'm doing, but I feel under pressure to tell them "I'm going to the doctor." It's harder to get approved PTO for vacation than it is if I'm sick. I've earned my PTO and I should be able to take it for any reason without hassels. |

It depends on the guide lines established by your work. For most companies you would just have to tell them you have an appointment. According to my companies guide lines, If they feel your are abusing it though, they can ask you where you are going. Also, you have to take your PTO at an appropriate time, you have to make sure it coensides with your supervisors schedule. If your guild lines state for instance only 2 people can be using PTO at any one time, and your use of PTO would violate this, then obviously you cant use your PTO at that time. HIPPA does not protect you from telling them you have a doctors appointment. HIPPA only protects you from having your doctor tell your work that you are seeing him, or what you are seeing him for. It does not pertain to what you tell people. |

No, you don't. Just say you have an appointment. That can't ask you about it. |

The HIPPA laws have to do with your medical records, not the fact that you visit a doctor from time to time.
Why do you feel "pressure" when you tell your supervisor you're going to the doctor? Does he/she give you a hard time or are you just sensitive about it?
You should certainly be able to take your PTO for any REASON you want to. The WHEN may be another issue, particularly if it's a discretionary matter such as vacation when your request may conflict with with the already approved requests of others. I doubt any responsible employer would deny your PTO request if it's to see your doctor. Just to be sure, request your PTO when you make your appointment; don't wait until the day before unless you have a sudden problem. |

That comes down to individual company policy. I know I need to call in sick or let my employer know if I leave work if I am sick. If I don't, it had better be an emergency. HIPAA doesn't apply in this type of situation because it's not a doctor's office or healthcare provider disclosing the information. It would be you disclosing it. Then you get into the area of how much you think your employer needs to know vs. how much they want to know vs. how likely it would be you get in trouble if you don't tell them. |

If you already submitted a time off form, and they approved it, your supervisor should be aware that you need to leave, and if you're coming back that day. |

Then dont tell them till they ask....no? |

you do have to tell them especially if you want a gauranteed release from work. you don't have to tell the reason why you are visiting the doc. it is also a privacy issue for your release so your supervisor should not inform your co-workers of why you are being released |
|

Pam

No. You don't have to tell them where you are going. Just request for the PTO. If they ask, tell them you have some personal matters to attend to. |
