Steven | If I see an add on Yahoo can I trust that the buisness has been checked out by Yahoo to be legitiimate company? |
Some companies want you to give them your email or sign up for "free" information. I just want to make sure i'm not signing up for a computer virus |

No.
Yahoo checks their credit rating to make sure that they can pay up, but it does not check the company itself because Yahoo does not have the resources to do the kind of checking that is required.
If a company is obviously fraudulent, or is doing something illegal, or if Yahoo is warned about it, then it will refuse to take the ad, but it doesn't actually go much further than that. |

NO.
They have no way of checking them all.
There have even been cases of big Flash ads containing malware and viruses. (These got removed right away).
They often sell a display ad space to an agent, who then fills it with different ads. Sometimes the ads are chosen from a pool, based on your preferences, location, age etc. This is called targetted advertising. So someone else at the same time, on the same page, might be seeing something quite different.
A lot of the small ads, especially on search pages, are not legit. (This applies to Google search, too). It is strange, but you can sometimes see ads on the search pages which are for sites that are also being spammed in Answers. Most of them are selling things that won't work (eg diet pills) BUT for many of them their main business is scamming......either the product doesn't work, or accepting a free introductory offer ties you in to a year's supply at a much higher price unless you return the sample in 14 days (but they make sure it doesn't arrive to you for 15 days) , or they plain and simple just want to get your credit card details.
The only way Yahoo could check them would be to buy from all of them. Magazines and newspapers don't check their advertisers, either.
Most places won't give you a virus. They just want your email (so they can spam you) or your credit card details. A few of these might try to steal from your card. The ones to be careful of are those that want your name, address, social security number etc, as they might try to steal your whole identity.
Get your self another email account, with a real-looking but fake name. Use that account for ANY "free" offer or any site that you sign up to. That way they have no access to the "real" you, and you can know most of the mail to that account is junk.
Double check the fine print about anything that's "free"....if it is really free they should not be asking for credit cards etc. |
