If Walmart sells at retail price, then how can they have "Always Low Prices"?
It doesn't make sense. Walmart sells stuff at retail price, so how can they have low prices? All the other stores have the same price as Walmarts merchandise. Is the "Always Low Prices" slogan a psycholigical ploy?

walmart acts as a loss leader on some very common items. Though you can't make a lower price on an ipod, you can be a loss leader on say, Paper Towels and Laundry Detergent and while they are in the store they just might buy an Ipod.

Alwaysmooths is the only one who answered the question correctly. Many of the things, the real high volume items, are sold at the price WMart paid for them. Some are even sold at less than they paid. Known as loss leaders.

Retail price is not set. It is simply the price that the retailer charges. Relative to the manufacturer's suggested retail price on many items, Walmart is indeed much lower. This is due to the mass orders they place with their suppliers as well as their lean-inventory system. By lowering the overall cost of doing business, some of the savings can be passed on to the customer in the form of price savings.

Some items have MSRPs that must be adhered to (i.e. new video games, systems, etc...)

Each store sets its own prices. What you pay at Walmart is often less than other places.

Since most individuals can't get things at wholesale pricing, you pay retail prices at almost all stores. "Retail" is not a set amount on each item. Each store can decide what their "retail" price is for an item.

They seem to always have items for a few cents less

Stuff's almost never sold at retail.

Specific stuff is even sold at a loss to get you in and jab you on a few things that are marked up.

That's why the prices in Walmart, Target, etc are all jacked up when you really start looking.

I agree with you, if you look at sum of there clothes their like $20.00 for a pair of pants. They are suppose to cut back on the retail price, but they just say "Always Low Prices" because it only refures to there food and other small iteams. Thats what I believe.
