If the big 3 US automakers all went bankrupt today, how do you think it would effect you?
Please tell me where you are from, and in what ways you think it would effect you.

From Ashland Ky and it is already effecting us! One of our biggest employers -AK Steel is laying off 700 employees TOMORROW, d/t the auto industry. It's about to take it's toll on us already! If you live in this area, someone in your family or someone you know works at AK

For every 1 Auto job there are 7 jobs that it supports. It will send the country into an insurmountable dive off of the cliff can you say Great Depression 21st century edition.

3 US automakers move out, 3 foreign automakers move in. It's not like people are going to stop driving becuase they have to buy a German or Japanese car. The auto industry isn't an industry that can become fully automated and run from abroad. It needs somewhat local factories and transportation industries to deliver cars to the lots. They have a physical product that needs to be manufactured, unlike some industries like the financial industry, where they can operate a business from anywhere in world with an internet connection, phone line, a fax line and a local post office (they don't have a physical product other than a small peice of paper called a statement, and a small booklet known as a policy book for insurance).

If the Big 3 go under it will be a short term effect, not a long term one. If you live in Detroit, it will suck even more for a while, but only until the Honda's and Volkswagon's start moving in with their fuel efficent good quality vehicles that will sell even more. Then they'll hire up all those folks that got laid off that are still considered specialty workers. I don't mean to degrade the workers in autofactories with this question, but will thier job really be any different whether they are operating a machine that makes a GM product as compared to machine that makes a Honda product? I doubt that they would differ much, so your work will still be in demand.
