If there is an economic downturn, how is it the supermarkets keep making bigger profits?

Jeffrey H
Because they are raising costs and most items
eventually the shelves stocked to the brim with all these
unused goods will be a thing of the past once oil gets to be
a short supply the years of plenty are at hand and slowly the shelves will squander down to real levels of support
and the delivery systems will be more supplies made to clos eot home supply lines and not any longer shipped to
far away place due to the high cost of doing this business and remote places will be hard pressed to see a fresh california strawberry or a georgia peach or a florida orage in iowa it will be far a few between and maybe only in season
california the bread basket of allot of the produce on the west coast will do okay but north and south dakota might be hrd pressed to see a shipment of fresh large heads of garlic and
day fresh berries and fruit from the california valleys
will probably only go to the only wealthy of states and stores.
As will the blueberries of the new england will be abundant
in the mass and new hampshire area but in florida you wont
be able to get them unles they are canned. or nuts
like almonds which 80% are grown in california along with pistachios And in the south pecans of the south will be hard to get in california. so Allot of foods will be cut into limited
supply and only availabe during peak or late peak season if at all. places like Ohio which sits in the center of the
most rail lines and shipping points in the country will do okay
and maybe local ized areas around ohio will do okay.
but very isloated spots like rural west virginia and old
wet areas that are swampy will fall into ever increased lower food supplies and some people will have to move to
be closer to food sources no longer will food be redily available in the amounts they have been as in the past wh oil was abundant and diesle fuels were under 5 bucks a gallon.
This will happen in our last part of life people are already moving from the rural suburbs to better afford housing
to cut back on spending the 100 or 200 a month on gas fueling the home car or truck. And cities like SF are showing higher home prices because people want to live where they
work and will pay higher prices for housing nearer to work.
the next thing will be people moving to places with access towater supplies the land with running water all year long will go for a premium and the water will be a asset to sell off
to those who can afford the water to their uses
the last thing is when you see people moving their himes below ground to make the land they live on available to grow
food and use for solar power cells to generate power to sell to others who dont own power or land.
as we move to a oil free planet alternative sources will be life
and life will mean energy sources of any types. for food will be
another commodity to be sold to bring in incomes.
a new orld we will have to make work all due to our missuse of a limited resource and made it run out way too soon to have fun and sport. Nascar will have a bad name in the furture
hard tothink of but true.
cheers

who says supermarkets make big profits? - they're lucky if they make 1% profit overall

Because the economy is NOT in a downturn. We would have to have negative GDP growth to have a downturn, we have not had that. The economy is growing, albeit it lower than last year, but is still growing. There is no recession, there is no downturn, this is all talk by the media.

Some industries are recession-proof and groceries is one of them. People still have to eat.
The recession (if we are there yet) has coincided with an enormous rise in the price of food. Supermarkets will maintain their profit margin throughout, so they make proportionately more.
This sector has also diversified into other areas, like clothing and white goods, which have seen their manufacturing price come down through Offshoring, especially in China.

because they already know their costs and make big profit if there's a further price increase.

When they buy their stocks, they bought in bulk purchase and at lowest cost. As the Market value increases, their profit increases. so as the size of their eyes... :)
