sophie0811 | If there is nothing written in my contract about an end of year bonus, does this mean that I'? |
I work in the Head Office of a multi million pound company. I am dedicated and work long hard hours. I also get on well with everyone, and am very good friends with my line manager...but I recently found out that I haven't been given a Christmas bonus. I was given a salary increase, but this isn't the same is it? I don't really know what to do, it feels like such a slap in the face. No one has said anything bad about me so why have I not received anything? |

If something is not mentioned in your contract.... that means that the company is not oblige to pay you anything.
That means if they paid you something, it's out of good will.
Don’t be immediately disappointed an increase is nice.
Otherwise talk to your inline manager, if you have a good relation…. use it.
Keep in mind that big companies have different salary schemes for different levels and positions. It could be that you get a higher increase (raise) than others in percentage. But it could be that only certain levels get a bonus such as: Sales, etc...
But normally the scheme should be mentioned in your contract as well, as the possible raise.
Good luck, don’t assume things….. talk to the inline manager.
It's not because you think everybody gets along with you, you are doing a great job. It's meassured with goals and achievements. |

If you are supposed to be awarded a bonus, you would have been told so upfront. Bonuses are usually performance-based, and you would have been told on what metrics you would be judged so as to inspire you to maximize said metrics. If it is a discretionary bonus (i.e. your manager pulls a number out of his ****) you would have also been told.
Bonuses are often awarded to people whose work directly drives revenue and/or profit growth. Those whose function is to support said people often do not receive bonuses. |

I agree with David's W's point below. The most constructive thing is to schedul some time with your manager. Ask what affects bonus payouts and why you didn't get a bonus. Last, ask what you can do to improve to get a bonus.
If you don't like any of the answers you get from your manager, spend a quiet days and try and objectively evaluate your skill set. See if there are things you can improve or is there training or education you can add to your skill set. Last, consider moving on to another company or industry that will give you financial rewards, but do your homework first before you pursue a change like that. Research interview questions and come up with good answers. Practice them on recording. As soon as you start the job hunt process, it will take on a life of its own. |

Welcome to the real world where the vast majority of us don't ever get end-of-year bonuses. |

This is going to hurt!
First, you may not be entitled to a bonus!
Second, you may not deserve one.
Third, your company may not have made sufficient profit.
Why not ask your line manager? |

Cut-backs my friend....my company didn't give raises or bonuses in 2007. If you got a raise which is based on your performance, then you should be thankful. Bonuses are never a guarantee and should never be considered part of your salary. |
