Here goes the scenerio...A woman calls up and is antagonistic...and wants to argue. You can tell it in her voice. Anyway, she says .."I disagree with your policy"...I just say politely.."I'm sorry, you disagree, but that is out policy"...She starts YELLING about the policy...I say...because I do NOT want to argue. "I need to place you on a brief hold, due to I have other calls to attend to."..She says nothing...Later, I get back to her...She starts arguing again and I am guiet. She says.."Are you listening?"...I say .."yes, Maam I am."...HOW do i get rid of her? I do not know what to do with UNREASONABLE people? This job drives me nuts and I am a nice person...I feel people hear my pleasant voice and figure I BADGER her! But this is not fair...so I have to put the people that are angry on hold and then get back to them. |

~~Working in customer service is a very difficult position.
I found the best way to handle these people is to do what you are already doing, listen politely, empathize (they really just want to be heard), and then remind them you are a consumer too, so you understand their frustration. When you take their side it seems to deflate their anger somewhat. Then you just politely tell them an address to write to (so corporate can hear the complaint). Remind them you are just following company procedures, as you are just an employee.
This usually takes the heat off of you. I feel for you, I worked in our own retail business for years and it was one tough job trying to keep people happy. I for one, think you are doing a good job at it, so just remember, they are mad at a situation and you are just a convenient outlet.~~ |

We all get one of them everyday and your a better person then me, because I would probably let her have it, by telling her (So you think your having a bad day let me tell you about my day...) and then I laugh about it behind her back. or I would have said to the lady excuse me just what did happen to make you so angry? Some times people don't realize it and they seem to take it out on the wrong person. Some times just need to let it out and the vent on the wrong person and some times I let them get it out and then they feel better so don't take it personal and hold your head high ok and I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year's too. |

I work in the legal field, and I hear complaints like that all the time.
This lady is just mad about something, and she has a grudge about your place of business. It was probably, her husband had an affair with someone in your hotel (or chain), and to this day she feels it is your fault.
My advice, keep a diary about her phone calls. But, also read Dale Carnegies book "How to Influence People and Win Friends" |
