If your employer provides lunch for a staff meeting during your normal hours, is it a working lunch?
If your employer provides lunch (say pizza) for a staff meeting that falls during your work hours, is it considered a working lunch or not? My employer says no, because I could have taken an earlier lunch. I'd like to get feedback before I go to HR.

Was your attendance mandatory? If so, it was a working lunch.

If your attendance was not mandatory your employer did you a favor that not many do anymore; he simply bought you lunch as a courtesy for attending his meeting.

Edit: As an add: He would also have to refuse you some 'lunch break' as defined by employment law for your state of employment - all states and countries are different and you would have to check your "Right to Work" laws.

Mine (Missouri) is a half hour break away from my regular work environment must be provided within the first 5 hours of my regularly scheduled work time. If this is not provided I am to be paid for that half hour of time.

I guess the question is are you still allowed to take your lunch break. If you were told that the staff meeting was your lunch break, and you could not take your regular lunch - before or after, that sounds like a working lunch to me. If you were allowed your normal lunch, then he was just providing pizza to be decent, and he's right.

If it's around lunch time - yes.

If you go to HR you'll get a reputation as a whiner.

Your employer is right. Did you tell them that you had other plans? They didn't tie you to the chair, did they?

LOL, your boss is mean LOL. anyway, we have a recession so don't get into his nerves, he might fire you in a minute especially in these trying tough times.

If you are still allowed a lunch break that is separate from the staff meeing than the answer is no. You still have the ability to take a break, just because you alread ate does not make it not count. Sorry but he's right on this one. It's not worth pursuing.

Your employer buys you a pizza, and you want to contact HR? Why? Did they order a pizza you didn't like? With the job market as it is today, I think you might want to stop worrying about frivilous things like this.
