Im 18 years old and work at Starbucks, I want to quit and work somewhere else, any suggestions?
I have been at starbucks for a year and about 6 months now and im thinking about moving to another job. I also might be promoted to shift lead pretty soon but dont know if i want to be promoted and then be stuck there for another year. Im majoring in business and marketing, and i would like to have a job that i could use my selling skills etc.

Well, it is good that you are thinking about jobs that will help you with the bigger picture. I hate working for stupid jobs that do nothing for your resume!

Anyway- I worked at Starbucks for about a year- I ended up quiting because of their "shift covering" policy- when I got so sick, was in the hospital, and didn't exactly feel like calling all the stores in the area to find baristas to call from the hospital....NO JOKE! All in all, except for that insanity, I thought that the company was great. What I will say for you, though, is that it might be worth it to see what kind of positions might be offered within the company in the way of marketing- on the corporate end there are alot of successful careers. And you already have your foot in the door...it might be good for you to take that shift lead position, and start talking to your store manager about who you can get into contact with about your goals. Is your store manager approachable? Mine was for the most part- but you can always go to another one in the area- maybe sometime when you pick up a shift there or something.

I don't know much about marketing myself, but on the business side, if you do decide to switch jobs, you may benefit from working in just a general office somewhere, to diversify your work experience. Your still pretty young, you could start out as a receptionist somewhere- they get paid comperable to what you probably make now after tips. Then, maybe you can work your way into another position that is a little more rewarding.

But, the only thing about office positions is that they generally want you to work M-F 8-5, and sice you are a student that might not be so fitting. One thing that maybe you could do is work for a retail store that you enjoy. I worked at Ralph Lauren, about when I was your age, and I loved it! i got a great discount, and the hours were pretty flexible- and the work for the most part was simple. i worked my way up from sales associate- to department lead- to HR training. As a department lead, i had so much fun with Visual Merchandising, translating corporate standards to work with the layout of my department. I was designing aspects of the layout as well, creating displays, coordinating maniquin outfits... it was alot of fun!

Well, i don't know if any of this has helped you, but good luck- and good job staying focused on your goals!

well in my opinion, I think you should stick it out for now, a promotion means more money. you get plenty of people skills working at a place like that, and you will make contacts via your customers, think about where all of your customers work? do you take the time to get to know them? and what is the job market like where you live, is it plentiful? there are alot of factors for you to look at before you decide to quit a job. also did you ever consider that one day you may be working the marketing department at starbucks? this is just a foot in the door for many educated people.

Sun & Ski Sports gives you alot of selling skills. Smoothie King is also a great place to get a job, but not necessarily using the 'selling skills' you want.

I think you should stay there. Sell the products that are there! Plus... Think about it... You are not going to be at that job forever. Once you graduate you are going to move on to bigger and better things, but wouldn't it look awesome on a resume for you to have a few jobs that you worked at for a considerable amount of time, than a bunch of jobs that you didn't work at for very long? Your choice though...

I think you should try Wall-Mart or K-mart that kind of organization. It can provide you an ample scope for advancement much better than a big coffee shop. Your degree is more suitable to join such an oganization.

try at a bigger store.. like best buy some other like that... they allways keep an eye on yer sales figures..and how do u talk to customers...

gud luck :D

browse around for other jobs while your still working there, and if no one calls you withen the next 2 weeks or so, then just quit.

its up to you, but if your job pays good, and the employers are really nice, then you've got it made...and also, you might need the money if your 18 and out on you own.

My son worked at Starbucks and ended up in sales at Kaplan University. he made a great base salary and in addition he worked for commissions over and above his salary. My suggestion is to check the larger corporations to see what kind of training program they may have for sales. Also think of a product or hobby that interests you and see if there is a sales job in that area. It's amazing what you can do on the internet and with some cold calling. Sounds like you want to do something that makes you happy and when you do that the money usually follows. Good Luck!
