In California is it legal for a bank to close because their computers are down?
I was wondering as a frined of mine got turned away from her bank recently, and as she used to work at a bank, she knew it used to be illegal for them to close up because their computers weren't working.

I work in a bank, and it is not illegal. Not being able to obtain correct information is illegal. Bank rules are very strict. If we can't verify that we are not giving someone money whose account is in default, that is a huge deal. Unfortunately, banks rely on computers now days.

riloh keen
of COURSE. it's not like it's a hospital or a post-office or something.

they have every right to close whenever they want, for whatever reason.

Adnan Sallam
I do not know legal or not , but what do you expect them to do sitting there.

what would they be able to do without computers?

luvsdogs
If they are dependent on computers, which probably 99.9% are, why stay open if they are down and cant do anything??

abfabmom1
What would be the point of staying open if their computers weren't working? They wouldn't be able to process any transactions, so why should they continue paying their employees?

Also, I think the real limiter is that they can't be closed for more than three days in a row.

I used to work for a bank and we closed down due to computers being down. If there is nothing you can do, why stay open. You can't do anything with out your computers in a bank. Your friends was wrong.
