In law what is the meaning of Subrogation?

The exact definition is:

Subrogation - The substitution of one person for another so that the person substituted succeeds to the rights of the other. Thus an insurer who indemnifies his insured against the loss of goods may be subrogated to the insured persons rights against a third party whose negligence caused the loss

There you go. Enjoy

Edit - David Ms answer gives your answer very clearly. Id say hes a law tutor so Id use his answer as a guide

DAVID M
Thurmars is exactly right. In legal terms it sometimes is simplified by saying "They stand in your shoes". With the insurance example you subrogate your rights to recover on say a car accident to the insurance company and they stand in your shoes, as though they were you

Viva La Eire!
well from what I know, an example of subrogation is when an insurance company legally takes your car if it was involved in a serious crash and written off. This helps to recover there costs in paying your claim.

I don't know if there are other occasions where subrogation occurs, that's just the only one I know of!

MANUEL M
Surogation is to demand payment for property that has been paid for by you to someone else. The clearest example is; your insurance company pays for damages to your car, damaged in an accident with another party, then Subrogates, or demands payment, from the person who damaged your car. When you accept payment from your insurance company for your car damages, you give the right to Subrogate to your insurance company.
