I was recently promoted and currently oversee 3 people, all who are nonetheless older than I am. I am 22 and graduated fairly recently in May 2006. I have been with the company since undergrad for almost 3 years now.
I am head of graphic design in my pharmaceutical company, and it seems no one wants to take me seriously when I try to assign tasks and projects. I make myself available and am open. When I am serious, people'd say things like, "oh, you shouldn't think so much or you'll get wrinkles in your pretty little face." I think they are only trying to joke, but I am their superior and if I was any more serious there would be problems.
Yeah, I might be young, but I am the only one on the team with a Masters, the only one that knows how to work with much of the software, and most importantly, I am their boss. I don't try to act like I am better than anyone, I just want the same respect they show eachother - basically everyone their age.
Am I just being paranoid?

bleuwra - I know I don't know everything because I am still learning myself. Who says just because I am younger I don't deserve the same respect. I won't be there much longer...sure. A company is going to get rid of the ONLY person who knows how it operates and the only one who can easily use, and troublefix complicated software?

they are not joking..they are being disrespectful...and they mean to.
they believe that with ever order you give, you are showing them who is boss...no matter how "nicely" you say it. if they are older...they resent your age...if they are men.....well i assume you know.
Men hate women with power over them. it is built into them, they cannot help it. You need to take a stand and the next time someone makes an infuriating comment like that..do a role reversal.
Place your hand firmly on their shoulder....smile and say...
"you let me worry about my face"
the breaking of the personal space will give you the upper hand, and let them know...you are the superior. good luck. |

Your "Masters", LMAO, they still look at you as a "a college kid", and resent you, your pretty looks, and most of your YOUTH!! But you'll be OK, just keep in mind you are as human, as they are, and we all have our faults,&ideas! I used to HATE "2nd LTs, 1st LTs, but it was'nt there personnaly, they were just STUPID, and nearly got us killed! But they always flaunted their ranks! Don't flaunt! good luck & brite futures ahead! |

Unfortunately, they see you as a short timer. You would be experiencing this even if you a male.
Imagine a new person just out of school telling you what to do even with you being there three years.
Right now get experience in the field you have chosen.

No you are not being paranoid and I know how you feel. With that being said you need to be stern at what you say and cut everyone off as far as joking or anything that's not work related. You can't mix business with pleasure just be more serious so they can take you more seriously that way they will know you mean business when you say something. Or you can pull each one that makes those comments to the side and tell them how you feel and the games stop today!....Good Luck! |

No, you are not being paranoid. They need to show you the same courtesy and respect that they would show any other boss. I'm not suggesting, being a tight-***, but at the same time, don't let your staff call the shots. Your the boss. You've got the skills and education, that I'm sure that you worked for. You deserve the repect that goes with it. Good luck. |

I have a feeling you may not be there much longer. Something you need to remember is that the masters degree doesn't mean anything now, and the job title does not automatically make you superior to your elders. You may not know as much as you think you do. You can't force people to respect you. I've seen this scenario play out time and again, and each time the "boss" has lost.
You can thumbs down me if you like, but I'm just telling it like it is and trying to help you. Letting go of the ego will go a long way. Respect is a two way street. And no, I've been here 15 years, and have never been fired because I know what it takes to stick around. |
