In your job. What means more to you: Praise from your boss or a pay raise?
My father worked as a supervisor in a lumber mill. Everyone wants more money. It goes unspoken, but praise from those above you is what you remember most. (above you in a managerial sense only) Do you agree?
Additional Details
surprisingly, in the poll I read in my dad's newsletter, years ago, praise was the highest motivator. We all want more money, but sometimes it is how the boss feels about us that means the most. Hopefully, praise and pay coincide.

I already make good money, and don't even spend half of it on myself. Praise means a hell of a lot more to me. And it can come from below as well as above. This last summer while driving cross-country, I stopped in Maine to see an old friend who used to work for me in the Navy. While we were sitting around with his wife and kids retelling the old sea stories for the 100th time, he gave me the greatest compliment I have ever received. He said, "Tim, the guys in our division REALLY WORKED for you." I'm a flinty old fart who never cries, but truthfully, that almost brought tears to my eyes.

Pay rise!!!

Lets face it none of us would go to work if we didn't get paid!

Show me the money! I can praise myself on a job well done!

I appreciate when my boss compliments my work, it makes me feel better about working for him. Pay raises also put smiles on my face.

I have worked for the same employer for 14 years and I would have to say that praise goes a lot farther than a pay raise... I have some of the best bosses and they are generous with both raises and praises...but I tend to remember the praises more.

P.S. I have a co-worker and all she ever wants is more money...it gets sickening listening to it... so I would have to go with praise!

I agree that praise from ANYONE whom we value is more valuable than money. Many people think that money is an unspoken type of pat on the back, but is it really? Raises, especially these days are mandated by law everytime minimum wage goes up. But praises, are priceless. We remember them and take them with us even long after we've left that job. But money, I'm young and I can't even remember how much I was getting paid at my last job, let alone if I ever got a raise.. I raise is what it is.. It is not a reflection of one's hard work per say.. It is a figure added to your paycheck for a number of reasons that may or may have nothing to do with how well a person is doing or hard they are trying.. But praises from people who are golden to us, are cherished like fond bits of memories.

I was a manager for 5 yrs. And if I felt someone was working hard I would let them know because, that helps them stay motivated if they know they are getting noticed for there hard work. We gave raises to our employees every year, but if I felt someone deserved it more than I would make a suggestion on the amount they would receive.

?
praise is #1 but raise is a close 2nd

It feels wonderful when you are appreciated at your work and your boss tells you that on occasion. To me that almost motivates me more than the money, although I would never turn down a raise.
I am already earning a salary so pride in a job well done is the icing on the cake.

praise don't pay the bills

I am my own boss...so it goes without saying I praise and worship myself and the current priority is mo money, mo money, mo money. Still, good point. Before I started my own business, I worked at a dreary job where I was unappreciated and the job itself was really quite pointless...very depressing and unmotivating. It would have sucked no matter how much it paid.

Neither.......

Kids coming back after college telling me how they still use so many things that I taught them. Kids coming back to tell me how words I said impacted them. Getting a letter from a parent telling me how much it meant to them to know that someone finally understood their child. These are the things that keep you pressing forward.
