Information system in business?
In the past information systems were developed mainly to improve efficiency of specific business functions. More recently, information systems have been viewed as tools for obtaining competitive advantage.
Thats nice in thoery, but they can really mess businesses up too. The company i work for installed a system in 2004. It was very poorly managed and poorly installed and has cost us millions of pounds lost profits as a result. In addition, it has not integrated well with parts of our system that could not form part of the solution.

ok, 2 types of information system there. The 1st one is an information system in the truest original form, something designed to do a job easier, such as sage for doing your accounts. The 2nd ourght really to be called a management information system as its not function specific but allows the collation of all data necessary to help managmeent reach decisions.
