Is Asda Really cheaper than Tesco?
I shop at asda but today i was really angry that the shopping total came up to £83. i didn't buy anything extra than i usually did. i even had to double check to see if the amount was correct and it was. the women who served me said yes, it is correct our prices have gone up? i cant get over the fact because they are always comparing themselves to tesco "Why Pay More"
What do you think?

Prices in all the shops have gone up in the last few weeks because of the global markets in wheat, rice and fuel.
Wheat based animal feeds mean that the price of meat has gone up. Pasta, Bread, Cakes and other wheat based products have gone up too.
Some countries are having riots because they cannot afford to eat.

As far as Tesco's is concerned, I think they are very expensive compared to other supermarkets. Their fruit and veg is always over chilled and lasts a few hours at home. They have a few loss leaders which appear to be cheap, but everything else is more expensive.
I cook a lot myself from raw ingredients. I think Tesco tends to cater more for the processed ready meal brigade, who can't cook, won't cook, but soon will have to cook if they want to afford to eat brigade.

Shop at Liddl. Even we posh are slumming it. Surprising items you never see in Tescos and the others besides normal stuff.. Investigate and save money. Your £83 would be £65/70 at Liddl.

Well when you want to check the price of something, use the link below to comapr prices.

They can really rip you off when your noticing it. I use Lidal, heron or iceland great prices.

When you go shopping take a list of what you really need and check the prices either in the local press or the on-line site mentioned above.Only buy what you need and don't be tempted to buy on impulse. If you notice the prices suddenly going up,don't buy. Most shops have loss leaders to get you in,take advantage of those and ignore the high priced items. Finally don't travel10 miles to save a couple of pence, consider travel expenses in your reckoning.

It depends what you buy really, Tesco generally is more expensive but it depends which products you get. My weekly shop is about £10 cheaper at ASDA than TESCO or Morrisons. But my friends find Morrisons the cheapest.

This is how sad ( + skint ) I am.........

I did a 'dummy' Internet shop at sainsburys , and then a 'dummy' shop at asda. EXACTLY the same items if it couldn't be replicated on both lists I took it off.

Now as I did it some things were outrageously cheaper in asda than sainsburys ( as you would expect...Sainsburys is deffo perceived as the 'dearest' supermarket )

BUT here is the gobsmaking bit...At the end of the shop Asda came out cheaper by a whopping er...£0.44P !

Not tried it for tesco yet cos their website is piss poor to navigate.

I think it depends what you're buying which may sound obvious but it's true.

Each supermarket will often have offers on certain things. I tend to buy the things I need when they're on offer rather than when I need them as such. Obviously that only applies to the stuff that will "keep". For fresh food though such as fruit and veg, I find the quality and freshness is higher at ASDA. Plus I find more things in stock than I do at Tesco's.

The plus and downside of Tesco's is the club card. They give you points which in turn give you money off, but they're also collating information about you with regards to the way you shop, whether you go for deals, if you are loyal to a particular brand etc etc. If the fact they're using this data in ways you don't know about doesn't bother you, then it's a good scheme.

Tescos do have their price compare thing but I also think they just select things that won't make them look bad. I often see the lil labels they have stuck around the shop telling you how much stuff costs at ASDA/Morrisons etc but in some cases the information is missing and I know for a fact that it is cheaper in one of the missing shops than it is in Tescos.

You also have to realise that food prices are going up in general and as they are a business after all, they're not going to absorb those costs for long before passing them onto the consumer.

What is suggested that you try the value/smartprice items of food as invariably, there's not much difference between that and the next "level" up. If that's not to your liking, try the shop's own brand stuff. And so on. I find ASDA's smart price chopped tomatoes just as nice as the more expensive brands and see no reason to pay £1.64 for 4 tins when I can pay 21p a tin smartprice. It knocked pounds off our weekly shop and made no real difference to the taste of what we ate.

Have a look at the site below which will give you more ideas.

Dr David
This is a really good question.

Firstly, how do supermarkets know what you want to buy?

When out shopping, I buy what I need on that visit, sometimes fresh vegetables, sometimes soap powder, other times cat food.

I tend to buy when things are on offer, but only if I use them, and put a few into stock for later.

Prices have gone up, in my opinion, but only to offset the price reductions on other items. Swings and roundabouts springs to mind. The supermarkets have us where they want us, to spend spend spend. My advice is only buy what you need, and if you come across a special offer, if you can use it for later, buy it.

The other day I needed some sugar, I paid 4p more than the supermarket, but saved £1.15 in fuel by shopping next door.

francol
I shopped at Tesco last week and spent a lot more than usual, but they did have quite a few half price offers on, only thing is if you buy them and don't use them it's a waste of money. but I must say that I usually find Asda cheaper
