I hate Bank of America. I live in Washington, though, so it could be managed differently.
I had an account when I was a kid and I had used it a little. I know I last had about $25 when I used it a few months prior. When I turned 18 I went in to withdraw my money because I wanted to open my own account without my mom's name on it and I had about $2 in my account. They said it was taken for some kind of fee, but would not tell me what the fee was for.
I was going to forgive them and open another account but they wanted 2 forms of ID to open an account with a paycheck in hand and they still wanted more identification, such as a credit card, before I could open an account. Could I even have a credit card without a checking account?
I finally ended up going with US bank. They took my paycheck with SSN and everything on it as a second form of ID.
US Bank has been very good to me, and have a 5 star $5 guarantee. If they mess up, they pay you. They also offer cash back if you use your debit card as credit.
Credit unions are said to be better than banks, but I have no experience with them. |

I had to open a BOA account to facilitate business transactions in Kansas and Texas - if I didn't need the account, I'd drop them like a hot potato - I hate BOA.
The best option for me in Texas was a checking account with Compass - free ATM's, free checks, but little or no interest paid on my balance. For my savings, I went to Emigrantdirect.com - they pay top rates on savings and they link to your regular checking account. |

Depends on what you need by "good." Will they go out of business and lose your money? If one goes,they all go. Its called the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and it is not insurance, it is the Federal Government policy. They pay the depositor's of a failed bank that promises to play by the Fe's rules, which is most of them.
If you want cheapest checks, best rates, that sort of thing. If you can get one in Texas, an online bank is the best thing going. ING here in Indiana has a local ATM, interest bearing checking, high rates on savings ,etc. You get the idea.
Someone has to pay for the cost of those fancy little buildings going up everywhere. |
