No, the company went bankrupt and closed all its stores in 2001. Here are the details:
In August 1999 the company emerged from Chapter 11 after being acquired by GE Capital, which gave up $1 billion in claims against the retailer. As part of the deal, the Financial Assurance unit of GE Capital acquired Montgomery Ward's Signature Group direct marketing arm.
Despite the company's revitalization efforts, sluggish sales in the 2000 holiday season proved lethal, and in December Montgomery Ward said it would close its doors. In early 2001 it announced all of its retail locations and other operating real estate assets would be sold to REIT Kimco Realty, Simon Property Group, and Schottenstein Group. |

Montgomery Ward's brick and mortal retail business was closed at the end of 2000. They filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1997 and survived for a few years as a subsidiary of General Electric, but GE gave up on supporting them and Wards was forced to liquidate all of its remaining assets.
In 2004, www.wards.com re-emerged as an internet-only mail order company. |
