AND HOW LONG IS IT OFF? |

Friday, 11 January 2008
Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke has said that the outlook for the US economy in 2008 has worsened.
But when asked if he was concerned about a possible recession he said: "The Federal Reserve is not currently forecasting a recession."

If I knew the answer to this I'd be the head of the Federal Reserve! But really, the word recession has found a bad meaning, but it's not: it's all cyclical. When economic activity slows, governments try to make money more available, whether with lower interest rates or lower taxes or a few other ways, but this won't always work and may actually lead into inflation, and we've actually seen a little bit of that already.
So to answer your question, I don't know. Maybe, maybe not. |

I've seen recessions every election year for decades.
The uncertainty seems to plant fear in peoples minds.
By the same token nothing really changes much after the election, and things get back to normal.
The changes are usually no more than changing their shoes. |

Well, you can't really tell how far away it will be until a recession occurs but mostly likely, in the long run it will occur. This is because most governments set "expansionary" fiscal or monetary policies which produce short term gain but long term loss, this is because they want the short term gain to get elected again. So, since that is the government's usual main concern, a recession usually occurs sometime in the future. However, if we want a long term gain, we would have to face a recessionary gap in the short run to be able to get there. Again, depending on the policies and other factors, we can't tell how far a recession will be away, but it will come. |
