X | Is Starbucks ethical? |
I would like to hear your opinions on the following (this is for a survey):
Lots of people go to Starbucks. Is it because of their coffee, or is it because of the environment Starbucks provide? Do you like Starbucks? Why or why not?
Starbucks is producing coffee beans in Yunnan in China starting 2009. Do you think this is going to have an effect on sales? How do you feel about this? Do you think there would be a difference in quality?
Starbucks is paying very little to its workers and earning a lot. What do you think about this? Is Starbucks ethical?
Thanks in advance. |

If you are going to ask this question, let me ask you one first.
Where are your clothes made? Look at the tag on your shirt. Most of the clothes you buy (even from high-end stores) are manufactured from third-world countries. They pay VERY little labor cost, and sell the goods for a much higher price. And it's actually a good thing for the third world countries, where education is pretty tough to maintain and it offers a job for the poor to support themselves.
Now answering your question, I do like Starbucks. I like the atmosphere and the coffee. It is overpriced, so it's not regular for me. I go there once in a while. I think their business plan is clever. Even if they are growing coffee in china for little price and selling for more, china might actually benefit from this.
Now, is Starbucks ethical? Depends on your point of view. You certainly don't think so. But I think both parties are at benefit, so yes it is. |

i think it's the environment, i know coffee is all different but really it is not worth 5 dollars a cup when you can make it at home or get at the gas station for 1.50 but i drink black straight up so no syrups or creams and what not. and personally, starbucks coffee is not that great, i'll take steak'n shake coffee over it anyday
new beans will be different, i dont know about quality wise i would think they would be quite particular, but price maybe.
Because Starbucks is unethical, just like all american business (well not all but i'll say my dad doesn't make half of "ceo' money building engines |

My husband is a finance man.. he always snubbed star bucks though his family is rich and goes there for their environment.. "good" coffee, and for their delightful gift cards that we receive so frequently.. he said places like starbucks are ruining the US and he'd rather have coffee from a local grocery store than there..
But for christmas he got a lb. of starbucks, from his mother, and now he loves it...haha he just buys it from the grocery store
but still I don't think it's ethical.. but neither is walmart |

It's funny you ask this ques. because I did a project in college on this very subject. I found that a lot of people are drawn to Starbucks because they are selling a lifestyle, not coffee, if you know what I mean. It's about the environment, the trendiness of the atmosphere and the people that go there. I don't think that the fact that Starbucks is producing in China is going to affect sales so much, it may be a profit gain for the company though because of cheaper labor and production costs. They may run into some problems later, though, if they do not oblige by labor laws, as many companies have a problem with this. It's hard to say if there will be a difference in quality, but, anyway, you're talking about something different now. Because Starbucks is selling a lifestyle, most people don't mind paying 4- dollars for a cup of coffee, it's almost like they'll take what Starbucks gives them. Now as for quality, will they know the difference, if there is any, is the question. You'll have to compare the two places where they manufacture now and where they'll be manufacturing in the future to get your answer about quality. As far as being ethical, I feel like any company that chooses to manufacture oversees should definetly pay their workers what they deserve, what they're worth, which is probably more than 50 cents to 1 dollar a day. No it is not fair that they make so little and work so many hours a day, but you have to also think about what roles the country's govt. plays in the this. Company's are only going to pay what is required and this is because they are saving money and that is the main reason why companies manufacture in various foreign countries. So as long as Starbucks is following the labor laws and not treating their workers like slaves, then I have nothing against it. |

Yes there is a major difference in taste from where the bean is grown. And as far as the china thing goes. I think their costs will go down for production but their prices should remain the same adding a bigger profit. I love the Coffee don't care for the pompis attitude of the patrons and employee. How in the hell is someone who serves coffee for a living going to be arrogant? It's funny to me. |

I enjoy going to starbucks, I think it has a nice atmosphere once you have been out with some friends to sit back, get a cappichino and have a good talk about life. I think they should be using the best quality stock they can get but I don't see why they can't pay their workers in the third world countries a better wage, after all they are making a huge amount of money.
Sadly a lot of companies are like this though. |
