No. It certainly has destroyed small stores and companies. It has also convinced most of America that it is OK to buy cheap and then throw away after it breaks. (I think that this is the worst part of their company.) It has put pressure on companies to cheapen their products by either going overseas or buying components from overseas. Lately it has brought out the worst part of corporations with their pay process and treatment of employees. I really think that Sam Walton is turning over in his grave with what is happening. |

Yes and No. Yes because they hire people. Yes because they have a $4.00 prescription program. No, because they import from Japan, China, etc..and choose to put super centers in rural towns, where small business owners cannot compete. Thus, the disappearance of the town square. |

If you look at the top of Wal-Mart on the large scale, then yes it looks good for America
It employs a massive amount of employees
It sells crap for cheap to allow for every American to join the consumption chain
From the bottom side of things
- It pays its employees crap wages
- It doesn't benefit the people at all...it takes more money from the lower class and directs that money to the upper class.
- Everything it sells falls apart, but its cheap so just buy another one
-Hilary Clinton sat on the directors board for 6 years
-Uses cheap foreign labor and materials
-Their mascot is a smiling face, but I haven't seen a smiling face at walmart since I saw an employee bail on a wet spot. |

In one word... no. It drives small, independent dealers out of business. Everyone from barbers to shoe salesmen to car dealers to grocers. While they may employ a couple of hundred people, think of all of the people out of a job. And Wal-Mart doesn't do anything for the community that they dont get a commitment from the press for prior to doing so. They give small scholarships and make community donations etc. only if the local press agrees to run a front page story on them. And environmentally the cause many issues with their huge stores and parking lots. From tearing down trees to causing numerous erosion and drainage problems they are not an eco-friendly establishment.
You want to know how they make money... they only pay for the merchandise that is scanned through their registers as sold. They do not pay for the merchandise that comes in the back door, rather they pay for the merchandise their registers say goes out the front door. The only way vendors can allow this is the sheer magnitude of their sales - there is no way a smaller company, even a nationwide chain could set those terms with vendors.
Oh, you hit a rough spot with me - I hate me some Wal-Mart!!! If everyone could see them for what they really are!!!! |
