"Wal-Mart" is just a store. But they are the biggest retailer in the world, and yes, they have some business practices that make them richer and richer and exploit people. Just a couple of examples:
About 1 yr ago, a bunch of women ex-exployees got together to file a class action law suit against WalMart because they were discriminated against, in promotions. (They were passed over so that men were chosen, regardless of who was more qualified.)
Several months ago several Wal-Marts were raided in the middle of the night. . . the gov't found that WalMart was hiring illegal aliens, paying them much less than they would have to pay US citizens, and of course giving these workers no insurance, and no help in how to become legal citizens. Just to save their "bottom line" by cheating these workers.
Just a couple of wks ago, there was a WalMart convention of some kind here in KC. There were some workers, brought here from central America by the people who are working to unveil WalMart for what it is. The workers were looking at merchandise, clothing, they had hand-sewn; and some of them cried. They said, "I was paid 30 cents to sew this shirt, and now it's selling for 19.99 " Those workers in central America are working because they need a job, and you can bet they don't have any health insurance.
Shop at Target if you're on a budget-- boycott WalMart-- or when you're there at least speak to a manager, or drop off a letter and let them know you won't be shopping there if they don't change their practices. |

That is political propoganda from people who do not like large corporations. Wal Mart is just another large corporation trying to make a profit for its shareholders.
An amusing anecdote: After the Russian Revolution (about 1919), Lenin came out of exile to rule Russia and make it socialist. The economy was so bad after WWI and the revolution that he had to set up a temporary CAPITALIST situation to generate money in the economy. That is amusing because socialists call us capitalist pigs. |

Wal Mart does more than people think to help our community. Examples:
Donate money to our local youth organizations.
Donated money to our local volunteer fire department and they have donated MANY smoke detectors so we can give them to our residents that need one.
Raise money to help the Childrens Miracle Network.
Gave gift cards to the hurricane evacueese that came to stay in our community.
They have helped MANY familes that lost their belongings due to fires.
Donated money to help restore a local landmark.
Many new busineses have come to our community because of Wal Mart.
They helped pay for a funeral where a three year old and his twin baby brothers were killed in an apartment fire.
They always donate toys and bicycles to our local christmas toy drive and give us christmas trees so we can give them away during christmas time.
Employees donate money if an associate has a death in the their family and need help with expenses.
donate food to our food bank and food to our animal shelter.
Is that evil ?
Does Target and other stores help the community ? ? ?
Wal Mart is blessed and prosperous because of what they do to help ! |

Interesting question. I have a friend or two who believe that Walmart are evil, on the other hand, I personally have no objections. I know a man who works there and he says that it is a good job. On the other hand yet again, I've heard that it is hard for small businesses to survive in the wake of Walmart. As I have never been under this pressure, I cannot speak to the accuracy of this statement. |

YES, every time I go there, I can sense evil all over the place. To tell the truth, WalMart is my least favorite store! |

This is probably one of the more rhetorical questions that I have ever seen, but I am going to roll up my sleeves and attempt to answer it in the best manor that I can.
Asking if Wal-Mart is "evil", is sort of like asking if the government is corrupt, the proper answer to both questions would be one in the same, there are certain people in both questions that would live up to the part of being the proposed question, but for the most part the generalizing of the whole by the parts is not a fair examination of either.
I think that the largest problem with WalMart is the fact that some many consumers, as well associates forget that WalMart is a buisness, and as a buisness (even though it is the top in the retail industry) it is there to make money as any buisness is. In order to make money they have realized that they have to streamline associates, cross train them so that less are able to do more, they have to attempt to get merchandise at the lowest possible prices in order to give those savings to the consumer, while still attempting to make payroll, and budgeting balance out to make a profit.
Apprently with the success of the company I can say that it works, since the company reported a net income of $10.3 billion dollars last year.
I can however objectionally say that there are ways that I feel the economic model could be improved. One of the major complaints that I have heard from Walmart associates is the company practice of cutting hours. To me this is sort of like stealing from Paul to save Peter, since this means that now you are cutting hours and leaving no one in the store to assist the customers, therefore when the customers can't find the items that they need or someone to assist them, they don't make the purchase causing the bottom line to go down further and forcing the company to make more pay cuts, and so goes the cycle. |
