YIPPY SKIPPY | Is a CEO higher than a President of a company? |
I never really thought of it until I was looking at a companies information and pay scale. The CEO makes more money than the President and is at a higher level. I thought a president was the highest level. I am confused. |

While the CEO may earn a higher salary, the President effectively earns the profits of the company, as well as his salary. |

There are several titles that you are likely to see at the 'top tier' of a company's org chart. Since they are defined by the individual companies and often arranged around key individuals in the organization, they can be somewhat ambiguous ...
Chairman ... presides over the board of directors (BOD) is appointed by the BOD and may or may not be a salaried employee of the company
Chief Executive Officer ... top executive (ultimate decision maker) employed by the company, hired and serving at the discretion of the BOD
President ... typically subordinate to CEO in large organizations, while the definition is similar to CEO (or same person as CEO in smaller companies); in companies where the CEO and President are not the same person, there is a defined set of roles and responsibilites for each executive
Chief Operating Officer ... top executive with 'day-to-day' operational responsiblities (contrasted in larger organizations where the CEO takes a more strategic role while the COO is a more tactical position concentrating on delivery of core business activities).
In large organizations, it is not uncommon to see the Chairman and CEO roles combined with one individual and the President and COO roles combined with a second individual.
Salaries for these roles may not be indicative of their relative 'power' within the organization. For example, a non-employee chairman may serve at a nominal salary or incentive payments to any of the individuals might skew they compensation relative their position in the hierarchy.
Due to mergers, pending retirements, and other organizational considerations, these roles may be split in various ways. Ultimately, this is determined by the corporate governance function of the board of directors. |

I'm not sure, but I believe the President of a company can fire the CEO.. I think that's what happened to Steve Jobs when he was making his company go all crazy with the Apple vs Mac stuff.. I could be wrong about their positions though.. |

The Cheif Executive Officer is usually at the top. It depends on the company structure and the pay / incentive package the executive agreed to. I remember one company where the CFO (Cheif Financial Officer) made more than twice the President because of financial incentives for performance in her contract. |

The CEO and President are basiclly the same thing, just a different title depending on what company you are working for.
The only thing high then a President of a company is the owner. Most football and basball teams have Presdients or General Managers..they are in charge of operations and day to day affairs, but they have have to answer to the owner of the team. |

it depends on how the day has been going |

It depends.
Each company is pretty much able to call their officers anything they want, and to organize those officers any way they want.
More confusing, they might hold multiple titles.
IN general, the CEO is the second in command behind the Chair of the Board, but the CEO calls 99% of the shots. Most major companies don't use the term "President" anymore, so there won't be a President and CEO in the same company (usually). |
