This collection agency called me. I am and was willing to pay it, but they refused to tell me the company that I owed money to. I tried calling the company, but got no answer--only a busy signal. I am going to call them again and write them. |

They have to provide you documentation of what you owe. The can't simply call you up and say you need to pay them money.
However, I think the rule/laws are different depending on whether they purchased the debt or they were hired to collect the debt. |

That is wierd. I would run a copy of my credit report and see who is on it. Do not give them any info until they tell you who they are collecting for. After all, how do you know you owe money if you don't even know who the creditor is? |

sounds like a scam to me, I hope they don't have any of your personal information. If you did give personal info to them the first thing you should do is file a report with the police in case something really screwed up happens.
They ARE legally obligated to tell you who they are collecting for. |

Yeah, if they can't even tell you who you owe, why pay it anyway? It's doubtless someone you've ALREADY PAID. This has happened to my husband before, to the tune of thousands. Also, they are supposed to tell you, legally, or they are violating FFC laws and can be fined. |

Insist the "collection company" provide with complete documentation of the claim, including whom for,and what for.
You may be in the process of being scammed...
OR
you might not owe the debt you are being asked to pay for.
another person with a name similar to yours 'might' be the one needing to pay the bill.
Have them mail you the complete documentation,
review it, and return any correspondence thru email, or copied and sent certified mail return receipt required.
this will help you if litigation is necessary. |

They will phone at all hours , they use scare tactics , and most of em do not know the laws that they are supposed to abide by .Don't pay them if you owe money , pay the people you owe! |

They are collecting for themselves. They buy the debt from creditors for pennies on the dollar. They will not stop, their sole purpose as a company is to collect debt.
They do not care if it is legitimate or not, and many will just make false claims of debt, and get people to pay up.
When they call, tell them that you do not owe this debt, it is false and you do not owe it.
If they say it is from XYZ company, tell them you paid that debt off, or that the debt is disputed.
Don't lie, tell the truth, they are not used to the truth. If you really owe XYZ company, go and pay XYZ company, and then tell the collection agency that you already paid them.
Otherwise write to (do not call them) XYZ company and tell them that the debt is disputed. It is my understanding that nobody can take action against a disputed debt, except in court. You will get a letter back extremely fast claiming it is not in dispute, and maybe even trying to resolve the dispute. Each time, send another letter disputing it, and keep copies of everything. You will probably be sending letters back and forth weekly.
I really dislike collection agencies, they are so dishonest. |

I certainly wouldn't pay anything unless they said who they were collecting the money for. How do you know you even owe the debt if they won't tell you ? I would be wary. It sounds like it could be a scam. |
