Miss K | Is an "orderly bankruptcy" something like a "genteel dismemberment?"? |
Additional Details The bottom line is that any form of bankruptcy lets the CEOs get off scott free while forcing the workers to forgo any representation, and to accept whatever the money powers choose to offer them Union busting, in other words. A classic example of the shock doctrine: using a real or manufactured crisis to achieve a long desired result. In this case, further destruction of labor unions and the reduction of the american worker to the level of a serf.

No. It's more like "restructuring."
Why are we putting random words in quotations?
It sounds like you're dead set against making the Big 3 profitable. Too bad it's going to happen anyway. |

If the CEOs evaporated and took no money, the structural problem of Detroit would still be terminal. With six UAW retiree workers or each UAW employed worker, the benefit system is showing the rest of your country the Social Security world that will be in the next 15 years. The Chrysler loans in 1979 should suggest that the problems of Detroit are not fabricated. The new government in Washington, D.C. owes the UAW. It is not right. But, I guess the insanity of the UAW being treated as a special class of employees will continue until a liquidation bankruptcy. The reorganization concept seems to have no supporters in Detroit City. Why should they compromise? Most new car buyers are not going to deal with the UAW. So, both sides of the story are not in a compromising mood. |

what in the world do bankruptcy and dismemberment have to do with eachother? |
|

it just means that they declare bankruptcy, don't lay off their employees, and the govt keeps the creditors at bay while they restructure the company's agenda.
EDIT: some of the problem I am seeing with the big 3 is that the UAW is actually hurting them, not helping in any way. For instance, UAW members still get to be part of the union once they retired.....and they get to vote in the union. So, what does that mean for the actual workers in the union? Their vote is diluted because there are more retired UAW members than active working UAW members. They diluted themselves to the level of a serf. The big 3 didn't do it for them. |

No. The point of a bankruptcy, ideally, is to reorganize the company and get protection from creditors in order to allow the company to continue and become profitable again.
So it's more like a genteel amputation. |
