Is eBay trading keeping the United States Postal Service alive?

Conan the Librarian
eBay is certainly helping the USPS. Just take a look at the boxes the USPS is offering to eBay customers:

http://freebies.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://ebaysupplies.usps.com/

They have the eBay logo stamped on them! The USPS would not be spending money to make special boxes if eBay were not making a signifcant positive impact on USPS revenues.

Economics Guy
No, the United States Postal Service is on life support. I believe they have always been, except maybe in their early years like late 1700s to very eary 1800s.

They are supported by tax dollars which keeps them afloat even though they don't turn a profit and they compete against Fedex and UPS. Which is very unfair that Fedex and UPS are far more efficient and they turn a profit yet the United States Postal Service can under price Fedex and UPS because tax dollars make up the diffrence. Ideally they should liquidate the United States Postal Service, and many other U.S. shipping companies could buy them up, like UPS and Fedex. This would allow for a more efficient shipping market, and allow the Federal Government to rake in a huge amount of cash (just think about the value of the land they own in every single town alone, not to mention buildings, trucks, and other infastructure that is worth something) to pay off a very reasonable portion of the national debt, and it would cut all of the federal spending on United States Postal Service, since lot a of money is allocated to them every year.
