chongo | Is it OK to joke around with Customers? |
I work for a pretty big corporation and I'm in I.T.
One of my customers I get a along with really well because be both grew up in the same town. We joke around alot and he is happy with my work.
My boss heard us joking around and took me aside and told me I shouldn't joke around with my customer cause it could cause problems in the future.
I always thought it was good to get along with the customers and to make them happy. |

Your boss is correct. He/she knows that if push comes to shove and something in the customer relationship goes sour, you and he could both end up eating your words. All those jokes could easily come back up. Face it, if it came down to deciding between your friend or your job, you are going to pick your job. So will your friend.
You should understand the difference between having a friendly relationship with the customer and "joking around" as you say.
Put another way, don't joke around. Do have a healthy and friendly relationship with customers.
There's a fine line there someplace and I can't tell you where it is in your situation/job/company. Inquire a bit further with your boss and try to establish where that line is located. |

People are such scardy pants today. I say lighten up! Joke with people, have fun. Don't take things so seriously. Life is too short to not have fun. Be friendly, but not too friendly if you catch my drift. Customers want to be treated with warmth, respect and recognition. We can most always tell when someone is not the kidding around type. |

I don't see the problem in joking with a customer you know..Especially if it doesn't bother that person that your talking with.I myself would much rather be talking to a nice funny employee than a snoody one!Sometimes I go in places and the employees will not even barely smile or seem that nice. Then sometimes I get the nicest helper and I walk away thinking (gee he or she sure was a nice person I hope I get them next time I come in to do business)Would a boss say that to a waitress?I give my best tips to the sweetest and funniest ones.Unless that customer has complained about you joking what's the big deal?Seems there's a Lil jealousy there to me.But just my opinion. If your not wanting to get fired though do what your boss says is prolly the best answer.Bosses usually have to have it there way or its the highway..If it was me and the person you know comes back in and would ask you one day why you don't joke around anymore? I'd say go ask my bleep-in Boss lol. |

Good customer interaction is needed and is something that people just have. You should explain you grew up with the guy. Tell your boss the two of you used to be lovers and see what the old stuffed shirt has to say. |
