~~It is very much allowed, they are running the business that pays your salary. They have to do whatever is needed to take care of the business. Only exception is as already mentioned and that is for student workers who are not able to work past certain hours. So as inconvenient as it is, if they say it's required, you must comply to keep your job.~~ |

As fair or not fair as it is the boss thinks they can do what ever they want to you as long as you are over 18 i think the right way of doing things would be to ask you if you mind staying but they feel they got you there already so what the hey just say something next time like ya know i would love to stay and help you out but i have to take mom to the dr. today and she waited weeks to get in that way it wont sound like you are being insabordanant and that you really wanna stay but cant |

Technically no, they cannot force you to stay beyond your scheduled shift They may ask, plead or beg but they can't force you. Of course when it comes time for your manager to give you a review they may think of you as "not a team player" or "not flexible", this could hurt your chances of getting a raise or moving up in the organization. When a manager asks you to stay beyond your shift it is usually for a good reason, no manager likes to burn payroll unnecessarily. For the sake of your fellow associates and for the sake of your company, which hands over a paycheck to you, it's always a good decision to help out when you can. |

don't take this the wrong way, but so many people ask if their employer is "allowed" to do certin things. unless it violates the labor laws or you have a contract that specifically details your exact responsibilites, hours, etc., they can pretty much do what they want-you work for them, remember? |
