phantasm | Is it an unethical practice....? |
...for pharmaceutical companies to market their products to ordinary consumers?
Is it concerning that these companies market variations of the same products?
Are the marketing techniques they use perpetuating a society of hypochondriacs?
What's more important profit or health? Additional Details Personally I feel that pharmaceutical companies as profit organisations should be restricted to marketing their products to doctor and health organisations only.
The fact of the matter is individuals who do not have medical or nursing degrees, who have no understanding of what implications taking a particular medication may incur, are put at risk. There are mitigating factors to any treatment. Drugs are not fast food... this is not an exaggeration. Look at paracetamol it is the epiphany of marketed drugs. Dozens of different brands but most concerning "75" different packaging's of the same thing. |

To answer your question, you first need to define what an unethical business practice is, and that is a very fixed definition.
"An unethical business practice is promissing something that you cannot deliver".
For Pharmas to advertise directly to consumers, is only unethical if they promise what they cannot deliver.
And that is the case far too often. |

A consumer can never have to many sources of information on a product.
I've a feeling all those thumbs down are because you wanted something more so you could make an essay for school out of it! |

The pharmaceutical companies are corporations like any other, trying to make money. I am sure they get sued much more often than standard corporations as well. Besides, if they didn't market their products, how would they make money? |

What is important is the freedom to make your own choices. You are free to start a drug company and you are free to buy whatever drug you want. You are also free to move to Leichstenstein. |

Given this is only country...besides one other....that can advertise perscription drugs on tv....I'd say profit. One good side effect from flomax is decrease in semen! So, look out all you porn stars that need to have that money shot to pay the bills! I'm for real about the side effect btw! |

yup.
There is a joke about a little boy asking his doctor if Cialias was right for him.
Sadly everyone thinks they are going to get a magic pill to fix all their ails and the doctors are holding back on them when they see all these commercials for amazing wonder drugs. |
