Is it any surprise that American auto companies can't compete on their home turf?
"GM says its total hourly labor costs are now $69, including wages, pensions and health care for active workers, plus the pension and health care costs of more than 432,000 retirees and spouses. Toyota says its total costs are around $48. The Japanese automaker has far fewer retirees and its pension and health care benefits are not as rich as those paid to UAW workers."

Do you think the UAW's refusal to negotiate wages so that their industry can receive bailout money is responsible or irresponsible? Personally, I understand why the UAW doesn't want to give up what they've negotiated for in the past. But with automakers in a very real financial crisis that could result in bankruptcy, I think it's madness that could cost all of them their jobs instead of a portion of their benefits. Why aren't they willing to accept a reduction in compensation that would help to assure their long term employment?

It's not the workers but the union. I think at the moment all they are doing is posturing for a better deal. I think in the end they will give back more than the are presently demanding and the automakers will give more than they are offering. Bankruptcy will hurt everybody. The workers, the retirees, and the American public. I understand how difficult it will be for the autoworkers to take a pay cut but in my opinion instead of being angry they should be laughing about how much they have been overpaid for so long.

I for one am glad that the Senate voted against spending my tax dollars to subsidize the wages of overpaid auto workers. I also hope that any stock options the executives receive must be priced above where the stock was before the stock tanked. I don't want them to receive any of my money because they got federal dollars to avoid bankruptcy.

The UAW IS a major speed-bump regarding competition.

ANOTHER problem is that Japan and China (in particular) place HUGE tariffs on US automobiles imported to their countries.

I knew a friend in the US Navy who wanted to ship HIS car, a Ford Mustang, to Japan... the Navy ships the car for FREE... BUT Japan wanted an "import fee" of $5000 and an inspection fee of $2000 to let the car into Japan.

I completely agree... I used to work at GM and still know a lot of people that do. Though it would be hard for some to get used to, it's better than having no job at all. I think the UAW was irresponsible here because if GM is really in as bad of shape as they claim to be in, people won't have jobs!! The local unions suck anyway, and it honestly surprised me that they let 14b deal go over wages. I think a lot of my friends at GM would take a wage cut and pay for some benefits in order to keep their jobs! That's also the nature of the manufacturing business, and it's life.. GM employees might soon find out how the rest of the real world does it!!

Greed is one answer. The theory that I got mine, so you will have to get your own. What the UAW refuses to acknowledge is that they will end up on the loosing end. Right to work states with auto manufacturers are doing quite well, despite the fact they do not have the embedded expenses of long-time retirees, etc.
The states where the big 3 do most of their manufacturing are also money greedy. They refuse to give businesses tax breaks like most of the right to work states provide to encourage businesses. The tax incentives for business in all reality increases the tax money realized by the states through other resources (higher sales resulting in more sales tax receipts, more employees resulting in more tax income, etc.)
The Union leaders and the CEOs have to back off and take a good look at their real motives. Is it greater riches for themselves, or is it for the benefit of those they are supposed to represent?

The four answers I've read (all there are now) show some really great thought guys & gals
