Is it compulary to address a supervisor as Mr ......?
is it compulary to address a supervisor as Mr ......? This is a case of trying to gain respect, but by asking has just made himself look a bit of a prat!

no, first names should be OK at work.

That depends on how well you know them.

Proper office etiquette rules, until the boss says otherwise, call him Mr. .... I do agree that he does sound a bit of a twit, he probably lacks confidence. If calling him Mr. Twit makes you irritable, then confound him by always calling sir instead, perfectly acceptable.

yaboo
Have pity on him his self esteem is low..Twat..that he sounds like, call him what you want..

Bardic
Just depends on the tradition of the business. When I started work, the supervisor (though he had a different title) was called Mr Smith, and the managers and directors were all addressed as Sir or referred to as Mr Jones etc.

If this bloke has just started to insist on being addressed in a different way from the norm, well, no matter what you call him to his face won't alter what you think of him!

As it happens my staff call me by my Christian name (by my request), but they're still in no doubt as to who is the boss; to others they refer to me as Mr Xxx.

Some (not all) older people, or people from possibly more formal cultures (e.g. Germany) find being addressed by their first name uncomfortable. Consider this before you just dismiss this as unnecessary.

If there are no mitigating factors like that, then you have to make your own decision!

dels replies
Not compulsory but might be respectful.. Might be more appropriate for junior staff to address an older staff member by Mr......rather than a christian name. Also do you address company heads or directors as sir? A lot possibly depends on the sort of company it is.

This is entirely dependent on the situation you are in For eg.
Unfamiliar person/situation. . If you are a gentleman, then certainly you would act as per the situation. No need to seek advice

hoegaarden_drinker
If he insist on Mr (Jones for example) then you are within your right to be called mister ..... However if he uses your first name when talking to you then you have the same right as he has introduced familiarity.

I used to have a secondary school teacher (a few years ago now) that called the whole class Mr or Miss (whatever) because that is what he expected in return

McGoo
It is not compulsory, it would be a sign of respect especially if you were new to the job, but I agree that by asking he may be a bit over the top,s he an ex school master?

Marvin the pedantic martian
Case in point, I just walked past mine and called him "dude" about a minute ago.

It depends on how formal your office environment is and how well you get on. I personally hate being addressed as "Sir " or "Mr" and will go out of my way to avoid being addressing anybody or being addressed as such!

By talking to someone in such a formal way, you are implicitly acquiescing to their dominance and I suppose I am a firm believer of all people being equal, regardless of their job title. As a manager, insisting on being addressed that way shows a lack of confidence in your own capability and that you do not appreciate the rapport that is needed within any business situation.

In short, he sounds like an idiot.

Compulsary? No, wouldn't have thought so, unless it is in your Contract of Employment.

depends on the situation
