Is it ethical for a company to ask employees to contribute to a charity where the charity is a customer?
Also the company makes more profit from the charity than it or the staff contributes.

No and I don't even like when the firm I work for pushes what ever charity they contribute to on me. No employee has as much disposable cash as the corporation or firm they work for.

Giving money to tom from accounting because he is out sick and the deadbeat employer doesn't want to pay his disability is fine but when that same employer asks for hard earned money of its employees that just ain't right.

Lot of times contributing money to a charity is great advertising for some of these firms. Have you ever gone to a charity event by lets say JP Morgan, you wouldn't even know who the money collected would go to. All you see is JP Morgan written everywhere, the charity just poses as a front for the advertising. Most of these firms or corporations would spend the same amount of money on advertising normally but this way the also come out looking like they care about the community.

Its all bullspit, the Kraft corporation which owns RJ Reynolds (they make Marlboro cigarrettes) sponsors cancer research charity events. Seems to me if they actually cared about stopping cancer they would stop selling those cancer sticks.

The service your company provides to your client can also add to their ability to raise funds. As long if the contribution is voluntary and not mandatory there is no ethical problem.

Sounds pretty shaky. If they track your contributions and/or put pressure on you to contribute, it's definitely out of line although it might or might not be illegal.

If they just say something like "this is a good place to contribute" or put up posters or something, that would be OK.

No. And in all states it is illegal for them to ask you to. It is legal for them to post a sign encouraging employees to contribute to a cause of their choice, but any coercion is strictly banned.
