Pleasant Peter Perkins | Is it fair for cinema's to treat their customers this way...? |

Surely this contravenes regulations in terms of competition and customer choice? |

That is unfair, because cinema prices are so expensive. I bet if the prices were the same as shops, lots for people would buy it from the cinema instead and they still might make more money. I always take my own. £3 is just unreasonable for a drink. I buy the popcorn though because you can't get it as nice from anywhere else. Yum salted :). Wish the popcorn was cheaper tho.
Also as Cineworld you can't even pay by card. What if you don't have enough cash on you for their extensive prices??
I get into the cinema as under 15 too. No one asks anything although I might not be able to get away with it much longer. |

Wont stop me doing it in the future. Pathetic prices they charge for a drink and a box of popcorn. |

Prices on cinema food are terrible and not at all fair...
... BUT...
They are not breaking the law, they would only be doing so if the cinema was a publily owned area like a park. If the only food allowed in a public park had to be bought at the park that would be illegal.
The cinema is in effect doing the same as a restaurant does with customers eating there. If I went to the Ritz bistro and ate a Pizza Hut take away pizza at their best table and then bought a packet of condoms from the vending machine in the toilets there I would be clearly abusing the restaurant even though I was a customer because I had bought something.
The food is not part of the movie. It is possible to fully enjoy the movie without food - a person who chooses not to eat anything can't be described as having had a worse experience than someone who has. Just like it is possible to enjoy a meal without watching anything. The cinema is treating, in a legally justifiable way, eating on it's premises as being different to viewing a film on it's premises and is exercing it's right as a food retailer.
However if the food was medically needed - for example sugar for a diabetic or iron tablets for someone with anaemia the the cinema could not legally prevent them from taking their own food.
Also if none of the food they serve is Kosher or Halal then they could be on legally dubious ground from banning such food from the premises.
Also you are allowed to take any reasonable quantity of food into the cinema with you as long as you don't consume it. If someone is made to leave somewhere because they own food purchased elsewhere then they have a good case for legal action. Unless the cinema can prove you are ingesting the food or beverages then they can't throw you out for owning them.
Finally, you can legally demand TAP WATER for FREE from any cinema that sells food and drink for consumption on the premises and if they won't give it to you then they have broken that law. |

Anyone running a business can make their own rules about how people access that business. You wouldn't take your own wine into a wine bar or pub, or food into a restaurant, so the cinema is only laying down the same rules.
The customer does have a choice - they don't have to go to that cinema. |

I can see why they do it, but it's unfair. Maybe if they didn't charge such extortionate amounts then people would be more prepared to pay. Personally I begrudge paying their amounts and always bring my own. |

Here in the USA, that is how things work as well.
The issue stems from the fact that while cinemas/movie theaters as a business charge the customer a fee to view view a movie, in order to keep ticket prices low, the majority of their profits come from the sale of concessions. Thus, by bringing in your own snacks and drinks, you are competing directly against the theater and substanially hurting their income. Also, remember that those high prices directly pay for the employment of the people who work the concessions counter.
Here in the US, businesses have the right to refuse service to anyone based on their own policies and regulations as long as they are evenly applied and non-discriminatory. So if a theater refuses to do business because you're violating their policy on bringing in outside food/drink, then they're perfectly within their rights.
Of course, also here in the US, we also have more rights then in the UK. Among them is limitations on being searched. Of course, bringing in a large grocery bag of food/drink like this man was doing would have gotten you thrown out as well. I'm sure that in the UK as well as in the US, most cinema employees make very mininal effort to enforce the rule on outside food and drink and would turn a blind eye towards violators as long as they were discreet about it.
That said,I believe it is fair in this case for several reasons;
1) The man was only asked not to bring food in. If he left his snacks at home, he'd be allowed to see the movie.
2) He was blantantly bring in a very large amount of snacks in a very public manner.
3) Do you need that much food/drink for a two hour movie? In other words, if you really wanted to see the movie, couldn't you do without?
4) The cinema employees would end up having to clean up the refuse, garbage and mess that much food would have made after he had left. |

Of course it does, and the cinemas want to keep it that way. |

i'd understand if the price of tickets was cheaper. but their extortionate. I honestly think if they were cheap people would buy from the actual cinema as a goodwill thing. i hide them in my bag too. they ask to look in my bag and they'll get what for! |

I remember seeing something about this on BBC Watchdog last year, apparently they can't stop you bringing your own food and drink. |

I have worked for a theater before. They make their money from the sale of those snakes at the concession stand.
http://www.fivecentnickel.com/2007/06/11/how-movie-theaters-make-money/
If you try and sneek be cool about it don't try and act like James bond. If you are busted just get rid of it unless you really did not want to see the rest of the movie but then my question is why did you go to the thearter in the first place when you could just go online and watch while eating a plate of spagettie and drinking a beer. |

that is shocking!!!!!! :-O omg! i hate going to the cinema cos the prices are unreal. its now like 6 pounds for an adult ticket + 3.60 for a medium popcorn and 2.50 for a coke (which is usually flat) or double the price for a big bag of sweets than what you would pay in a shop!!! its a joke really! every time i go the prices have risen. i prob wouldnt be too fussed if they provided good customer service ect but the people are the most ignorant and usless customer service people i have ever encountered cos they no they'll always be a demand for movies so customer service isnt a big priority cos customers will always come. i cant believe that. just goes to show that peoples freedom is becoming less and less. |
