Is it generally true that at big corporations, you don't do much work?
When I was self-employed, I worked all the time when I was 'on the clock.' I didn't chat around the water cooler and all that other extraneous activity. I got a so-called 'white collar' job with a big corporation and it looks to me like half the time people are just chatting on the phone and not doing much, or if they are, they're working practically in slow motion. It makes me feel weird that I can just hang out and not focus on a task, and it doesn't seem like anyone wants me to create more work for myself. Is this typical of corporate work life?
I saw the same thing in several corporations where I had consulting assignments. What you have to realize is that most corporate managers feel that their personal compensation is, in large part, based on how many people report to them. As a result overstaffing becomes very desirable. As long as business is good no one cares and the corporate culture encourages and rewards those who manage to hire the most warm bodies.
When business turns bad or new management comes in and wants to make a good impression things change. Heads roll and those that are left actually have to start working for a living. The shock is traumatic. Particularly since when the layoffs start the buddy system, rather than individual performance, often dictates who stays and who leaves.
I suggest that you keep your resume updated at all times.
Hope this helps

That isnt always true. It depends on what you are working on. I know people in big corporations that do work late and dont work late.

This behavior is why companies start downsizing or go out of business.
It seems that this environment could eventually have a negative effect on your job satisfaction
