Is it just me or has customer service gone down the drain???

Down the drain. I blame management for tolerating it by keeping people that should be canned out of fear of being understaffed.

Fast food is the perfect example...low paying jobs, so not many people are there because cooking burgers is their "calling." So service at these places is many times adequate at best. But, out of around 50 fast food chains in the metro area where I work, 4 or 5 consistantly have excellent service, friendly staff, and a pleasant atmosphere.

Why is that? They pay the same as their counterparts. They are selecting employees from the same available pool. The restaurants I'm thinking of for my example are parts of chains that have other stores in our area that don't have the same service, so it isn't a corporate thing.

It has to be having local management who has true leadership skills and is able to inspire people.

I work as a customer service rep myself and I can agree with you. It seems the big wigs are more concerned about the quantity than quality. In the end it's all about the mighty dollar. How do you expect to make loyal customers or keep them when the service is crap. Making money is the main concern.
Before if we had a customer who thought we provided great service and they told our manager this we would get a nice bonus added to our check.... Now we get a pat on the back. It makes me sick. That helps pay my bills and gives me more incentive to continue great service.

It's not just you. Customer service has taken a huge downfall. With all the attitudes now-a-days (and I'm in my early 20's, so I'm not an elder person stating this about a "young'in"), a lot of people just worry about their selves. They don't even try to LOOK like they care about other people. Yet they are the first to say something about how they were treated by others.

Now, I'm not saying I'm the best worker...but I do what I can to get my customers what they want and work time is when you work, not laze about. Where I work, there is another employee that does nothing but check her email all day, or file her nails. She'll have a customer right in front of her and she'll pretend not to notice. Yet, she listens if anyone is coming so she can minimize her email screen and pull up our work's system, thus making it LOOK like she's doing something. Then she complains that she has so much work to do and she does not have time to get it all done.

Part of the reason I think customer service has gone downhill is because people do not know how to separate their personal life with their work life. If someone had a bad day, instead of shaking it off or putting it behind them when they get to work, they continue carrying it with them, making them crabby, moody or easily agitated. Most do not understand the importance of keeping the customer happy or the financial profit of keeping those customers and giving them what they want.

Yes it has deteriorated considerably. Part of the problem is our fault as consumers that we take that kind of treatment and do nothing. I decided a while back to not take it anymore. At the checkout at our local Walmart the clerk was very rude to my wife and mother in law. I called the manger and this clerk is VERY nice to them now..same with our cell provider, was rude to my wife, I called the company and told them I'd use smoke signals and throw my phone away if it happened again. They responded by tracing the transaction, terminating the person and calling me with the results. Stand up, guys, and take it to them. It helps.

guess
Maybe they're tired of dealing with ruder and ruder customers?

Customer Service.???. Never heard of it.!!!!

No, not just you. Customer service has gone to the dogs. It's incredible that we pay the prices we do for things and can't get any satifactory service. Of course, the other problem is that people say "that's not my job" and won't take an extra few second to help or direct you to help.

very frustrating

No, it's not just you! I was in sales and customer service for 20 years and if I would have treated my customers the way we get treated in this day and age, I would have lost my job! People no longer care about the consumers needs or wants, they go to work to get their wages, put their time in and leave!
I, too, am so disgusted with all this, it's maddening to try to get a problem solved! Plus, getting "ripped off" is the worst, all the promises, warranties, etc. are "talked up" to get your money, BUT when you need them, it's either not covered or it's not that person's job, etc. and don't you just love how it's always in tiny "fine print" that most people can't even see! Let's start boycotting!!!
