Is it legal for a company to alter the date on an invoice?

I purchased goods on credit from a large corporation on the 1st of the month yet the invoice is dated the 30th?
I have investigated further and the company in question allways changes the date on their computer at every month end.
Seems it is not just me that has experienced this.
When people complain to them about it they then manually alter the date and post/fax out a second rate copy?
In effect having two 30ths or 31sts or 29ths etc.
regardless of the goods being purchased on the following month.Surely there are tax issues with this sort of practice.

No, that is very illegal. It is also a serious SOX (Sarbanes Oxley) violation. This should be a finding and be reported in the companies financial statements as a footnote. It not only deals with tax issues, but also discounts on receivables to vendors pending on when items were actually purchased. The fact that it is back dated instead of forward dated by a day or two makes it a black & white issue. It means companies have one or two less days to pay the bill in order to receive the purchase discount. I would report this company to the BBB and have them do the follow-up work to make sure this is the case.

When I worked in Sales Ledger, at the end of the month when we had a pile of delivery notes to invoice they were invoiced dated the last day of the month regardless of when the goods were sent out during that month. I think as long as it's invoiced in the correct month it's ok. If they are just providing you with a copy of the invoice with a manually changed date I don't think they're doing anything wrong. Although I don't know what the difference is to you as long as the date is in the same month and they have not changed it to an earlier date. (that doesn't quite sound right, but please don't take offence!!! I'm just not sure how to re-word it!!!) Also, once an invoice has been done on the computer you are unable to change it.

No - neither Canada nor the US allows this type of change. The only type of change allowed on an invoice is to correct an honest mistake - this change must be documented. Short of that, no changes to an invoice are allowed.....

Illegal - on the invoice must be the day of purchase.

well it could have been the 30th of the previous month. so that would be ok. otherwise it was probably a misprint.
