Is it legal for a company who shuts down for the holidays but make their employees use their vacation time?
Our office is closing for business starting Dec. 24 and returning on Jan. 5. Employees are to use their vacation time during this time off (total of 3 vacation days as there are several holidays in the mix). It means that we have to "bank" the hours needed if not we will not be paid. The company has been doing this for years. Is this legal?
Yes. It's also very legal for them to not give you the option and just not pay you for those days. Then, they wouldn't have to pay you the holiday either.
I believe you have to work the day before and the day after a holiday to receive holiday pay with most companies.

unfortunaly yes it is. they cant make you use your time but if you dont they do not have to pay you either.
Drive a school bus those people are off all summer with no pay. most of em have to go on unemployment or find a second job

Yes under the working time regulations companies can specify days that you have to take as holiday. Employers can also legally refuse you particular holiday requests.
