career advice
Is it me, or the company?
I recently graduated from college with a biology degree and will begin nursing school in the fall. For the past year during my semester breaks, I have worked for a home healthcare company as an office assistant and homemaker/companion for clients. Recently one of the RN's sons has begun working at the company and since then I noticed some changes. My boss no longer trusts me and seems to be turning the office employees against me. Everything I do is a problem. For example, my handwritting is suddenly an issue. When anything is missing, I get blamed. If I write a personal email, I am scolded for wasting time, while my fellow employees sometimes talk on AIM or send text messages. There suddenly is a desperate attempt to know where I am and what I am doing at all times if I leave to visit clients. I hold one of the highest educational degrees in the company, yet I have not received a raise and am paid one of the lowest salaries. The question is should I quit?

>>For example, my handwritting is suddenly an issue.

Use the computer to print out written documents. (My handwriting sucks).

>>If I write a personal email, I am scolded for wasting time.

Don't write personal emails at work. Do not chat, IM, or play games on a computer at work, irregardless of what other employees do. Use chat and email and work computers ONLY for company work.

>>There suddenly is a desperate attempt to know where I am and what I am doing at all times if I leave to visit clients.

Leave a message on your desk and with the boss's secretary where you are and how to reach you when you leave to see a client. (This means you are important, they want to know where you are).

>>I hold one of the highest educational degrees in the company, yet I have not received a raise and am paid one of the lowest salaries.

You work between semester breaks, you probably will not get a raise unless you ask for it.

>>The question is should I quit?
Find another job first, then give at least 2 weeks notice. Always give notice, never burn bridges. You might need a reference later. Always say nice things about your previous employer.

Of course - there are more jobs out there where you can be treated better, and if the office has become 'poisoned' and unpleasant, there is no reason to stay. You don't have to rush out, but take the time to find a new job where you will be happier and your skills and experience and training will be appreciated.

You didn't mention it - but was there ever a confrontation between you and the son? Did he ever ask you out and you denied him?

Usually there is a reason behind issues, and unless you confront your boss and supervisors - you won't have a clue what to do to proceed.

If you can get another comparable job somewhere else, quitting may be the way to go (though I wouldn't quit until I actually had the other job). First though, I'd just confront the boss and ask them what is going on. If they deny everything and you don't see any change then go ahead and quit.

Not sure why having one of the RN's sons would cause a change but my wife used to work at a family owned company. It was a small company and about half the employees were family, half were not. You quickly figured out that if you were not family you were a 2nd class employee, and she eventually quit because of this though it took some time as the job market was tough. If this is what you perceive as the problem there, then yes I would definitiely move on - but not sure your problem is the same as this.

What you are experiencing could be harassment and you might consider speaking with a lawyer.

You could also confront your boss and ask him/her for the sudden change in their attitude towards you. You might actually get an answer that could be worked out.

Never walk away until you have something else to go to. You are in a rough situation. While this is going on do nothing personal and play by their rules as best you can.

It's hard to tell from this distance whether the problem is with the company, nepotism, backstabbing, or something about you. In my opinion, it would be better to get out of the environment. This is just one of many jobs you will have in your career, and it isn't going well. It would be very beneficial to you to get a letter of recommendation if you can find an ally in management.

Well Boss, I think that whatever you attract is part of the ideas generated by your mind. Think positive and believe you can do well and better everyday and your boss will start looking changes and everything will be ok. Don't quit: Be patient and Perseverance...
