Is it ok to address donation letters to stores "Dear Store Manager", or should I call and ask for?
actual names of who the letters should be directed to? Are there any tricks to making a great impression in a letter, showing that our cause is worth their money? I'm leaning on the direct name side, but I wanted yall's opinions. Thanks!

Better yet show up and ask to speak with the manager. They get so many letters they usually end up in the garbage. At least that is where the ones I receive go.

Rachel
I would definitely take the time to find out the store managers name first.

chatsplas
Name is necessary. Don't want it to look like mass mailing. Also, going in person is usually more effective, maybe 2-3 weeks after mail. Most effective is if you have personal connection with them, and you mention it. "I am a longtime customer of MyStore. . . ." "This charity is doing great things in XTown and MySTore has always been an improtant part of the community"

bankerbroker01
always personalize them

I think if you use their name it makes it look you like you put more effort into it then just printing off 50 form letters and mailing them out asking for stuff.

angel_baby
You should call and ask for the store managers name. Then that way the letter will be more personal and the person will have more empathy for your cause. Good luck!

Call them first and ask who to address the letter to. Ask if you can speak to that person and find out if they have restrictions or guidelines for giving. Every store does it differently, and some stores don't give at all, so it's always best to find out first. If they donate, don't forget to write them a nice thank you letter. Good luck!

p.s. Most stores won't give money. They usually give coupons, gift cards, or non-cash goods.
